Overview of Slowking
Slowking, known in English as Slowking and in Japanese as ヤドキング, is a Water and Psychic-type Pokémon originating from Johto. It is the royal evolution of Slowpoke when it comes into contact with a particular Shellder. This creature is distinguished by its large crowned head, a symbol of its heightened intelligence, and by its strategic role on teams oriented toward defense and control. In certain regions such as Galar, an alternate form exists that completely changes its type and playstyle, but the classic version remains centered on Water and Psychic moves and on the manipulation of stats and special abilities.
Slowking is appreciated by players for its excellent bulk, with high HP, solid Special Defense and very useful support options. Its balanced stat base allows it to fill both a defensive and a strategic support role. With an appropriate nature and EVs invested in bulk, this Pokémon becomes very difficult to take down in battle.
Evolution and How to Obtain
Slowking evolves from Slowpoke when a Shellder latches onto its head. The evolution normally requires a trade while holding a King's Rock. This transformation gives it a more imposing appearance, a more regal form and more intelligent behavior. Trainers can capture it more easily in certain dedicated areas, but the catch rate remains similar to other Pokémon in the same category. In the Pokédex, Slowking is listed as a royal Pokémon capable of solving complex problems through the psychic power released by the Shellder.
Stats and Base Information
Its stats rest on a solid foundation: plenty of HP, very high Special Defense, decent Attack and low Speed. The Pokémon largely compensates for this slowness with support moves like Light Screen, Water Pulse, Psychic or Zen Headbutt in certain sets. Whether in a classic game or in Pokémon GO, Slowking remains a reliable choice.
When breeding, male and female Slowpoke produce eggs that can retain the nature or certain IVs with an appropriate held item. Its height exceeds one meter and its weight is several dozen kilograms, reflecting its imposing stature. Depending on the game, various Pokédex descriptions emphasize its intelligence or the potential danger if the Shellder suddenly releases its power.
Types, Strengths and Weaknesses
The Water and Psychic type grants it good coverage but also weaknesses to Ghost, Grass, Dark and Electric moves. However, thanks to its Special Defense, Slowking tanks special hits very well. It resists Fire, Fighting and Ground fairly well, which opens up interesting counter options depending on the opponent's nature. Players also appreciate its moves that reduce enemy power or boost its own stats.
Useful Moves and Strategic Role
Slowking learns moves such as Psychic, Surf, Water Pulse, Confusion, Tackle and can use Curse or Water-type attacks to control the field. In competitive play, it is often run as a tank or support, capable of healing, setting up screens or disrupting opponents. Moves like Thunderbolt or Ice Punch appear in certain sets depending on the game, reinforcing its flexibility.
Value in the Trading Card Game
In Pokémon TCG expansions, Slowking often appears in forms highlighting its intelligence or its royal aspect. Certain Slowking cards include mental disruption abilities or effects on the opponent's hand, faithfully reflecting its strategic style. Card players sometimes seek out rare versions featuring detailed artwork of its crown formed by the Shellder.
Forms and Regional Variants
The Galarian form of Slowking, while different, remains thematically linked to the symbiosis with Shellder but completely changes its type and gameplay. The classic version nonetheless remains the best-known, especially for teams oriented around Water and Psychic. Each form has its own set of moves and animations, offering several ways to play this Pokémon depending on the version.
