General overview of Dustox
Dustox is a Pokémon of the Bug and Poison type introduced in the third generation. Its English name is Dustox and its Japanese name is Dokucale. It is the direct evolution of Cascoon, obtained at level 10, making it a Pokémon accessible very early in the adventure. Dustox is primarily oriented towards defensive battle and status-based harassment rather than raw power. In the Pokédex, Dustox is often described as a Pokémon that scatters toxic dust using its wings, capable of poisoning or putting opponents to sleep.
Type, weaknesses and resistances
The Bug and Poison type gives Dustox a particular defensive profile. It resists Fighting, Poison, Bug, Fairy and Grass-type moves, allowing it to hold on longer against certain opponents commonly encountered in the early and mid-game. However, its weaknesses are notable against Fire, Flying, Rock and Psychic-type moves. These weaknesses must be taken into account during important battles, particularly against Gym Leaders or Pokémon specialised in those types.
Base stats and EVs
Dustox's base stats show a clear defensive orientation. Its HP and Special Defense are decent, allowing it to withstand special moves over time. Its Attack and Special Attack remain modest, which limits its direct offensive potential. However, its ability to inflict status conditions more than compensates for this lack of damage. Dustox's EVs are primarily oriented towards Special Defense, making it interesting to train in order to reinforce this specific point.
Moves and battle strategy
Moves are the central element of Dustox's gameplay. It naturally learns moves such as Toxic, Stun Spore or Venoshock, which allow it to control the pace of battle. Dustox can also use Bug-type moves to take advantage of STAB, even if their power remains limited. In battle, it is often used as a support Pokémon, capable of progressively weakening the opponent rather than knocking them out quickly. This approach is particularly effective in prolonged battles.
Evolution and place in the Pokédex
Dustox is the final form of the evolutionary line originating from Wurmple via Cascoon. Unlike Beautifly, its alternative evolution, Dustox is distinguished by a more defensive and strategic orientation. Its number in the regional and national Pokédex allows it to be quickly identified among Hoenn's Bug Pokémon. This quick evolution at level 10 allows players to choose very early between two radically different playstyles.
In-game utility and optimisation
In practice, Dustox is most useful in the early chapters of the adventure and in certain specific battles where status conditions make all the difference. It quickly reaches its peak utility, but remains viable longer than its stats might suggest. Its ideal Nature prioritises Special Defense or HP in order to optimise its resilience. When used well, Dustox can become a true nuisance for opposing teams, especially when protected by a more offensive Pokémon.
Cards and presence outside the games
In the trading card game, Dustox has several cards focused on poison and persistent effects. These cards highlight its ability to deal damage over time rather than through a single massive strike. This faithfully reflects its role in the video games and reinforces its identity as a tactical Pokémon, based on toxic dust and battle control.
