General overview of Lotad

Lotad is a Pokémon of the Water and Grass type introduced in the third generation. It is known as Lotad in English and as ハスボー in Japanese. This Pokémon is easily recognisable thanks to its large circular leaf resting on its head, which allows it to float on the surface of the water and move calmly across ponds, lakes and wetlands.

In the Pokédex, Lotad is described as a small aquatic Pokémon living primarily in calm waters. Its leaf serves to absorb energy from the sun, which explains its dual type. For players, it represents an excellent starting point for building a Water- or Grass-oriented team at the beginning of the game, particularly in versions set in regions rich in aquatic areas.

Type and battle role

Lotad has the dual Water and Grass type, an interesting but demanding profile to master. This type grants it useful resistances against Water and Ground-type moves, while also giving it access to effective Grass moves against many common opponents. In return, it remains weak to Bug, Poison and Flying-type moves, which requires a degree of caution in battle.

In battle, Lotad is primarily used as a support Pokémon early in the game. Its decent base Speed allows it to act before several opponents, while its modest HP limit its prolonged time on the field. It is not designed to deal heavy damage, but rather to weaken the opponent and prepare for a sturdier evolution.

Base stats and progression

Lotad's base stats reflect its status as a small Pokémon. Its HP and Defense are relatively low, but its Speed is decent for its level. Its Special Attack is slightly higher than its physical Attack, which encourages the use of special Water or Grass moves as soon as possible.

As it levels up, Lotad learns several useful moves such as basic Water capabilities and control-oriented Grass moves. It then evolves into Lombre, then into Ludicolo, making it a highly appreciated evolutionary line for its versatility and ability to adapt to different playstyles.

Notable moves and capabilities

The moves available to Lotad are primarily focused on the Water and Grass types. It can learn moves that deal consistent damage, as well as utility moves useful in strategic battle. Certain TM capabilities reinforce its interest early in the game, particularly for players looking to optimise their team quickly.

Thanks to its leaf, certain moves connected to nature and grass integrate perfectly into its base moveset. Even if its offensive potential remains limited before evolution, it remains effective against many Pokémon encountered in aquatic areas.

Capture and location

Lotad is generally found in wetland areas, near ponds and lakes. Its capture is relatively simple, making it accessible to beginner players. Its encounter rate often depends on weather conditions and location, reinforcing its connection to the aquatic environment.

In certain games, it appears more frequently under specific conditions, which can influence Pokédex completion and optimisation. Its small size and calm behaviour make it easy to spot on the surface of the water.

Lotad in trading cards

In the Pokémon card game, Lotad regularly appears as a basic card. These cards often highlight its Water or Grass type, with simple moves consistent with its role. For collectors, certain editions particularly well illustrate its leaf and peaceful appearance.

Lotad cards are appreciated for completing evolutionary lines and for their aesthetic, particularly in series focused on nature and aquatic environments. They generally remain accessible in terms of value, making them interesting for both players and beginner collectors.
