Detailed information

Overview of Stunfisk

Stunfisk is a Ground/Electric-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation. Its Japanese name is マッギョ. This Pokémon is known for its flat and deceptive appearance, which allows it to conceal itself in mud in order to trap opponents during battle.

In the Pokédex, Stunfisk is described as a Pokémon that lives buried in the mud of wetlands. It immobilizes enemies by releasing electricity when they step on its body. This mechanic translates very well in-game through a defensive playstyle based on terrain control and gradual attrition.

Type, weaknesses, and resistances

Stunfisk has the dual type Ground and Electric, giving it a distinctive defensive profile. This type makes it completely immune to Electric attacks, while also resisting Flying, Steel, and Poison moves.

On the other hand, its weaknesses are pronounced against Water, Grass, Ice, and Ground attacks. In strategic play, it is therefore essential to anticipate these threats and use Stunfisk as a defensive pivot rather than a frontline attacker.

Base stats and defensive potential

Stunfisk's stats are clearly oriented toward Defense and HP. It does not have a very high Attack or Special Attack, but its ability to absorb hits makes it an excellent choice for stalling in a battle.

  • Solid HP allowing it to last several turns

  • Decent Defense to absorb physical hits

  • Very low Speed, directing it toward a slow playstyle

  • Modest but sufficient offensive stats to pressure opponents

This profile is particularly interesting in formats where controlling pace and setting traps is paramount.

Abilities and strategic value

Stunfisk can have useful abilities like Static, which may paralyze an opponent on contact, or Effect Spore in certain generations. These abilities reinforce its role as a trap Pokémon, capable of slowing down the opposing team without dealing heavy damage.

Thanks to its Ground type, it can also shut down certain strategies based on Electric attacks, making it very effective against teams that rely on that type.

Use in battle and recommended EVs

In battle, Stunfisk is primarily used as a defensive support Pokémon. It excels at setting traps and gradually wearing opponents down through moves like Earthquake or Rock Tomb, combined with control techniques.

  • EV spread focused on HP and Defense

  • Defensive nature such as Bold or Relaxed

  • Frequent use of Ground moves for coverage

  • Constant pressure on opponent switches

This playstyle makes it particularly effective in long battles and strategic formats.

Stunfisk and the Trading Card Game

In the card game, Stunfisk is often portrayed as a defensive or disruptive Pokémon. Its cards feature paralysis effects, indirect damage, or slowing mechanics, consistent with its role in the video games.

Some Stunfisk cards are appreciated for their low energy cost and their ability to hinder the opponent from the very first turns. This makes them a situationally interesting card for control- or tempo-oriented decks.

Additional information and forms

There is a regional form of Stunfisk from Galar, of the Ground and Steel type, which completely changes its playstyle. However, the classic form remains highly regarded for its unique dual type and its ability to catch unprepared opponents off guard.

Thanks to its original design and well-defined role, Stunfisk remains a one-of-a-kind Pokémon, both for strategic players and for collectors who appreciate atypical cards.
