Overview of Clamperl
Clamperl is a Water-type Pokémon, known in French as Coquiperl and in Japanese as パールル. Introduced in the third generation, it occupies a distinctive place in the Pokédex thanks to its unique evolution system and its strategic importance for players looking to complete their collection or optimize their battles.
This Pokémon takes the form of a tightly closed shell around a pearl. Its natural Defense is high, making it an interesting base despite modest offensive stats. Clamperl is primarily sought after for its evolution potential into Huntail or Gorebyss, two very different forms oriented respectively toward Attack or Special Attack.
Type and base characteristics
Clamperl is exclusively Water type. This type grants it useful resistances against Fire-, Ice-, Steel-, and Water-type attacks, but makes it vulnerable to Grass and Electric types. These vulnerabilities must be taken into account during battles, especially in competitive games or raids.
Clamperl's base stats clearly emphasize Defense. Its strengths lie in its ability to take hits early in the game. On the other hand, its Speed and Attack are low, which limits its effectiveness without evolution. Its Nature can slightly compensate for certain weaknesses depending on the direction chosen by the player.
Evolution and special conditions
Clamperl has a particular evolution system that relies on trading. When traded while holding a DeepSeaTooth, it evolves into Huntail. With a DeepSeaScale, it evolves into Gorebyss. This mechanism makes its evolution dependent on player trading, which increases its appeal in Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, and Pearl versions.
Huntail stands out with high Attack, ideal for physical strategies, while Gorebyss specializes in Special Attack. This choice of evolution allows players to adapt Clamperl to different playstyles, which is rare for a Pokémon that appears so simple at its base stage.
Moves, TMs, and useful abilities
Clamperl primarily learns Water-type moves such as Water Gun or Aqua Tail via TM. Its access to moves remains limited, which reinforces the idea that it is a Pokémon of transition. Certain support moves can nevertheless be useful for stalling a battle.
Through TMs, it can slightly expand its move set, but its true potential reveals itself mainly after evolution. Players must therefore think about the investment in Candies, levels, and IVs before deciding whether it deserves long-term training.
Battle use and counter-strategies
In battle, Clamperl is rarely used as-is at a high level. It primarily serves as a prerequisite for obtaining Huntail or Gorebyss. However, early in the game or in specific challenges, its Defense can surprise ill-prepared opponents.
To counter it effectively, Grass- and Electric-type moves are recommended. Its low Speed also makes it vulnerable to fast Pokémon capable of dealing heavy damage before it can react.
Clamperl in cards and Pokémon GO
In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Clamperl regularly appears as a basic card tied to evolution strategies. Its value depends mainly on its role in a deck centered on Huntail or Gorebyss. Certain promotional cards can have an appealing price for collectors.
In Pokémon GO, Clamperl is available with a similar evolution system requiring specific items. Its shiny version is sought after by collectors, although its combat usefulness remains limited without evolution. As a Buddy Pokémon, it allows players to earn Candies useful for completing its evolution.
