Overview of Walrein
Walrein is an Ice- and Water-type Pokémon introduced in the Hoenn region. Its French name is Kaimorse and its Japanese name is トドゼルガ. It represents the final form of the evolutionary line that begins with Spheal and continues through Sealeo. Walrein is recognized for its great resilience, its high defenses, and its ability to absorb opposing attacks over long battles.
This Pokémon has a massive body, covered in a thick layer of fat and ice that allows it to withstand extreme cold. In the games, Walrein is often used as a defensive wall capable of standing up to many types of attacks while dealing steady damage thanks to its wide range of Ice and Water moves.
Type and resistances
Walrein has the dual Ice and Water typing. This combination grants it interesting resistances but also several significant weaknesses to take into account in battle. It resists Water- and Ice-type attacks in particular, which makes it very effective against other cold-based Pokémon.
On the other hand, its weaknesses to Fighting, Rock, Grass, and Electric types must be anticipated. In competitive play, it is often recommended to pair it with partners capable of covering these vulnerabilities in order to maximize its longevity on the field.
Base stats
Walrein has stats oriented toward Defense and endurance. Its HP are high, allowing it to absorb a large number of hits. Its Defense and Special Defense stats are decent, reinforcing its role as a defensive pillar.
Its Attack and Special Attack are balanced without being exceptional, but sufficient to threaten the opponent with effective moves such as Surf, Blizzard, or Ice Fang. Its Speed remains relatively low, which means it is better suited to a slow but resilient role.
Moves and abilities
Walrein can learn a wide variety of useful moves in battle. On the Ice side, it can use Blizzard, Ice Beam, or Ice Fang to deal heavy damage, particularly against Ground-, Flying-, and Dragon-type Pokémon. Water moves such as Surf or Hydro Pump provide excellent offensive coverage.
It can also learn strategic moves such as Protect, Rest, or Toxic, reinforcing its effectiveness in long battles. Certain TMs and HMs also allow it to expand its moveset with Rock- or Psychic-type moves depending on the game version.
Evolution and how to obtain
Walrein is the final evolution of Sealeo. Sealeo evolves into Walrein from a certain level, making it a Pokémon accessible through the course of the adventure without complex conditions. This evolution considerably reinforces its defensive stats and gives it access to new moves.
In the main series games, it is generally obtained by evolving Spheal and then Sealeo. In Pokémon GO, Walrein is available through evolution with specific Candies, and it can be used in raids thanks to its durability and solid HP.
Competitive use and cards
In battle, Walrein is appreciated for its ability to absorb hits and disrupt the opponent. It is often used in defensive or balanced teams, where it can slow down the pace of the match and wear down the opponent's resources. Its role is not to finish a battle quickly but to control its duration.
In the Trading Card Game, Walrein appears in different forms, sometimes in an EX version. These cards generally highlight its high HP, its Ice-type attacks, and its resilience, making it an interesting card for players who enjoy defensive and durable strategies.
