Detailed information

Overview of Huntail

Huntail is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. Known by its French name Serpang and its Japanese name ハンテール, this Pokémon is one of the possible evolutions of Clamperl. Huntail is particularly appreciated by players for its offensive profile and its design inspired by abyssal creatures. In the Pokédex, it is described as a Pokémon living in the ocean depths, using its powerful tail to attack by surprise.

Huntail stands out with a straightforward playstyle, focused on physical pressure. It does not evolve further after its transformation, making it a final form with stats designed for battle. Its Water type gives it good versatility against several common opponents, particularly Fire- and Ground-type Pokémon.

Type and weaknesses

Huntail is exclusively Water type. This type allows it to benefit from interesting resistances and a wide selection of reliable moves. In return, it remains sensitive to Electric- and Grass-type attacks, which must be taken into account when building a team.

  • Primary type: Water

  • Weaknesses: Electric, Grass

  • Resistances: Fire, Water, Ice, Steel

Stats and battle potential

Huntail's base stats are oriented toward Attack. It has solid HP and a high physical Attack, making it a Pokémon capable of dealing significant damage in a short amount of time. Its Defense is decent, but its Speed is average, which often forces it to take a hit before acting.

  • HP: solid for an offensive Water type

  • Attack: very high

  • Defense: average

  • Speed: moderate

In Pokémon GO, Huntail is not a priority choice for raids, but it can surprise in certain Leagues thanks to its raw power and a good move set.

Evolution and how to obtain

Huntail is the evolution of Clamperl. To obtain Huntail, a trade is required while Clamperl holds a specific item. This mechanic makes it more technically demanding to obtain than average, which increases its rarity and appeal for collectors.

  • Base: Clamperl

  • Evolution: trade while holding an item

  • Final form: Huntail

It shares its starting point with Gorebyss, which introduces a notion of choice and chance into the evolution.

Moves and useful abilities

Huntail primarily learns Water-type moves, but can also use Dark and Ice moves depending on the generation. These moves allow it to hit a wide variety of types and optimize its use in strategic battle.

  • Powerful Water moves for STAB

  • Physical moves suited to its high Attack

  • Interesting TMs to vary sets

In competitive use, Huntail is often played as a direct attacker, aiming to deal maximum damage before being knocked out.

Huntail in the Pokédex and cards

In the Pokédex, Huntail is associated with the abyss and deep-sea hunting. Its design and lore reinforce its image as a marine predator. On the card side, Huntail remains a discreet but sought-after Pokémon among certain collectors, particularly in sets tied to Hoenn.

Huntail cards often highlight its massive tail and its threatening appearance, with attacks dealing high damage for a low cost. This makes it an interesting card for Water-focused attack decks.
