General overview of Burmy

Burmy is a Bug-type Pokémon known in English as Burmy and in Japanese as ミノムッチ. Introduced in the fourth generation, this small larva has a unique mechanic tied to its cloak, which directly influences its appearance and, most importantly, its evolution. Burmy is primarily used as a strategic intermediate stage, both in the main series games and in Pokémon GO.

Burmy's core concept revolves around its environment. Depending on where it battles, it adopts a different cloak. This characteristic makes it a very specific Pokémon to understand in order to optimize its evolution and its use in battle.

The different cloak forms

Burmy exists in three distinct forms, called cloaks. Each cloak is purely cosmetic at this stage, but it determines the final form of its female evolution.

  • The Plant Cloak appears when Burmy battles in grassy areas, forests, or near trees.

  • The Sandy Cloak is obtained in caves, mountains, deserts, or rocky environments.

  • The Trash Cloak appears in cities, buildings, or industrial areas.

It is important to note that the cloak changes automatically after a battle if the environment is different. To evolve Burmy into the desired form, the location of battles must therefore be controlled precisely.

Type and battle information

Burmy is exclusively Bug-type. This type makes it vulnerable to Fire, Flying, and Rock moves, which severely limits its durability in battle. Its base stats are low, with few HP, modest Attack, and decent Defense only thanks to its cloak.

In standard battles, Burmy is not designed to deal heavy damage. Its role is primarily transitional. It is, however, capable of taking a few physical hits early in the adventure, especially against low-level opponents.

Available moves and abilities

Burmy's movepool is limited but consistent with its evolutionary stage. It mainly learns Bug and Normal-type moves. These moves primarily serve to accumulate experience to reach its evolution.

  • Tackle to deal simple damage early in the game.

  • Bug Bite, a Bug move useful against Grass and Psychic types.

  • Protect, allowing it to stall in certain battles.

Burmy does not have access to powerful moves via TMs, which confirms its secondary role on a competitive team.

Evolution and candies

Burmy evolves starting at level 20. The evolution depends on both gender and the cloak worn at the time of evolution. A male Burmy will always evolve into Mothim, regardless of its cloak. A female, on the other hand, will evolve into Wormadam, whose type depends directly on the Plant, Sandy, or Trash cloak.

In Pokémon GO, 50 Burmy Candies are needed to trigger the evolution. The cloak system is also present, which requires players to catch Burmy in different environments to complete the Pokédex.

Strategic interest and cards

Burmy has little interest in advanced battle, but it is crucial for collectors and players looking to complete all forms. Its cloak system makes it a sought-after Pokémon, especially in games where the environment is difficult to control.

In the trading card game, Burmy appears as a basic card with simple moves, often used as a pre-evolution for Mothim or Wormadam cards. Its value rests more on set completion than on raw power.

Mastering Burmy therefore means less about optimizing its stats and more about precisely understanding its environment, form, and evolution mechanics.
