General overview of Bastiodon
Bastiodon is a Rock and Steel-type Pokémon introduced in the fourth generation. Its English name is Bastiodon and its Japanese name is トリデプス. It is known for its massive shield-like face and for being one of the most defense-oriented Pokémon in the entire Pokédex. Bastiodon is the direct evolution of Shieldon and perfectly embodies the role of a defensive wall in battle.
Thanks to its type combination, Bastiodon has excellent resistance against many common moves. Its base Defense and Special Defense are extremely high, making it a strategic choice for absorbing hits in prolonged battles, both in the main series games and in Pokémon GO.
Stats and battle potential
Bastiodon's stats are clearly geared toward survival. Its HP is decent without being exceptional, but its Defense and Special Defense rank among the highest of all Rock and Steel Pokémon. On the other hand, its Attack, Special Attack, and Speed are very low, which severely limits its offensive potential.
This distribution makes it an ideal support Pokémon. In battle, Bastiodon is mainly used to stall, set traps, disrupt the opponent, and force switches thanks to its bulk. Its max defensive stat allows it to hold its own against many offensive Pokémon that lack Ground or Fighting moves.
Type, weaknesses, and resistances
The Rock and Steel typing gives Bastiodon excellent defensive coverage. It strongly resists Normal, Flying, Ice, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, and Fairy moves. These resistances make it an excellent counter to many Pokémon that rely on special or unadapted physical moves.
On the other hand, Bastiodon suffers from very pronounced weaknesses. Ground and Fighting moves are extremely dangerous for it and represent its main vulnerability. Fire and Water moves can also cause problems depending on the battle context and the opponent's level.
Main moves and abilities
Bastiodon's moves are mostly utility-focused. It can learn Rock and Steel moves such as Flash Cannon, Stone Edge, or Iron Head, but its weak offensive stats limit their raw effectiveness. On the other hand, it excels at using support moves like Stealth Rock, Iron Defense, Protect, or Toxic.
In Pokémon GO, Bastiodon is particularly valued in the Super League thanks to its fast charge moves and its ability to absorb enormous amounts of damage. Its role is not to knock out opponents quickly, but to wear them down over time and secure tactical advantages.
Strategic use and trading cards
Competitively, Bastiodon is often integrated into defensive or balanced teams. It is used to counter specific threats and to secure the field. Its low Speed stat does, however, require careful anticipation of opponent switches and precise turn management.
On the trading card side, Bastiodon is regularly represented as a defensive Pokémon with high HP values and damage-reduction effects. These cards are appreciated by players looking to slow down the pace of play and build strategies based on endurance and battle control.
Bastiodon thus remains an iconic Pokémon for players who favor defense, strategy, and tempo management over raw power.
