Detailed information

General overview of Azurill

Azurill is a Normal and Fairy type Pokémon introduced in the second generation. Its English name is Azurill and its Japanese name is ルリリ. It is a baby Pokémon recognizable by its large spherical tail and its childlike appearance. Azurill is best known as the pre-evolution of Marill, which gives it a special place in the Pokédex for players looking to complete all evolutionary lines.

In the games, Azurill is often encountered at low levels, making it accessible right from the start of an adventure. Despite modest stats, it has limited strategic interest but remains important for breeding, collecting, and certain highly appreciated trading cards due to their design.

Type and role in the game

Azurill has the dual Normal and Fairy typing, which gives it a natural resistance to Dragon type attacks and a partial immunity against certain specific combat styles. This typing is most interesting for understanding its positioning in low-level battles.

Its main role in the game is not to be an offensive Pokémon but rather a transitional one, useful for unlocking Marill and then Azumarill. It is often used to complete the Pokédex or to prepare an optimized evolution through happiness.

Weaknesses and resistances

  • Weak against Poison and Steel type attacks

  • Resistant to Bug and Dark type attacks

  • Immune to Dragon attacks thanks to the Fairy type

Base stats and values

Azurill's base stats are generally low, which is consistent with its status as a baby Pokémon. Its strengths lie neither in Attack nor in Defense, but rather in its utility role.

  • Low HP but sufficient for early levels

  • Very low Attack and Special Attack

  • Limited Defense and Special Defense

  • Average Speed for a Pokémon at this stage

These values make Azurill poorly suited to prolonged battles, but ideal for training or quick evolution.

Main moves and abilities

The moves available to Azurill are mostly oriented toward support or light damage. At low levels, it primarily learns simple moves.

  • Splash, completely useless in battle but iconic

  • Tackle, a basic Normal type attack

  • Bubble, a Water attack that can reduce the opponent's Speed

  • Bubble Beam, useful against Fire type Pokémon

Azurill can also learn certain moves via TM depending on the version, but this is rarely worthwhile given its low power.

Evolution and obtainment

Azurill evolves into Marill when its happiness level is sufficiently high. This evolution does not depend on a specific level but on a mechanic linked to care, battles won, and walking with the Pokémon in the party.

It is generally available in early areas, often near water. In some games, Azurill can also be obtained through breeding or specific events.

Azurill in the trading card game

In the Pokémon trading card game, Azurill is often depicted as a cute and accessible Pokémon. Its cards generally have few HP and simple attacks, but they are highly appreciated by collectors.

The illustrations often highlight its large tail and cheerful personality, making it a sought-after card in certain sets focused on baby Pokémon or early generations.

Useful information for players

Azurill is not a Pokémon designed for competition, but it remains essential for completing certain Pokédex entries and optimizing evolution chains. It is advisable to focus on its happiness rather than on its moves or EVs.

For collection-oriented trainers, Azurill is an excellent example of a Pokémon whose value lies more in its evolutionary role and design than in its battle performance.
