Detailed information

General overview of Hariyama

Hariyama is a Fighting type Pokémon introduced in the Hoenn region. Its name is identical in English — Hariyama — and it is known in Japanese as ハリテヤマ. It is a massive hitting Pokémon, specialized in punch and palm attacks, designed to take hits while dealing heavy close-range damage.

Hariyama is the direct evolution of Makuhita and represents a clear power increase from the moment the evolution level is reached. In the Pokédex, it is described as a fighter capable of stopping trains with the force of its palms, which perfectly illustrates its role in Pokémon battles oriented around raw strength and endurance.

Stats and battle base

Hariyama's base stats clearly highlight its defensive and physical offensive vocation. It has a very high HP total, allowing it to stay in battle for a long time even against powerful opponents. Its Attack is one of the highest among non-legendary Fighting type Pokémon.

  • High HP ideal for long battles

  • Very strong physical Attack oriented around punches and palms

  • Decent but not exceptional Defense

  • Average Special Defense

  • Low Speed, which makes it vulnerable to fast Pokémon

Thanks to this solid base, Hariyama is often used as a primary heavy hitter or as an offensive wall in many competitive teams, particularly in doubles format or in classic strategic battles.

Fighting type and weaknesses

As a Fighting type Pokémon, Hariyama benefits from excellent offensive coverage against common types such as Normal, Rock, Steel, and Ice. However, it has significant weaknesses against Psychic, Flying, and Fairy types, which must be taken into account during training and team building.

Its type also allows it to resist several physical attacks effectively, further reinforcing its role as a pillar in close-range combat.

Evolution and obtainment

Hariyama is obtained by evolving Makuhita at a certain level. This evolution is straightforward and quick, making it a popular choice in Ruby and Sapphire as well as in many modern games. Once evolved, its gain in HP and Attack is immediate and very noticeable.

In Pokémon GO, Hariyama is also appreciated in raids and Gym battles thanks to its high values and its consistent damage potential.

Moves and key techniques

Hariyama's movepool is centered on Fighting and raw power attacks. It naturally learns many techniques based on punches, palms, and heavy blows, reinforcing its identity as a hard-hitting Pokémon.

  • Powerful Fighting attacks ideal against Rock and Steel type Pokémon

  • Fire or Ice techniques via TM to broaden coverage

  • Boosting moves to increase Attack or staying power in battle

  • High-power attacks with variable accuracy

This wide choice of moves allows for different sets depending on the desired playstyle, whether as a pure offensive attacker or in a more resilient HP-focused build.

Hariyama in the trading cards and training

In the trading card game, Hariyama regularly appears as a robust Pokémon, equipped with attacks dealing high damage in exchange for a significant energy cost. Its large size and imposing design make it a card appreciated by collectors.

For training, it is often recommended to invest EVs in Attack and HP in order to maximize its overall effectiveness. At level 40, Hariyama becomes a true pillar capable of turning the tide of a battle when properly supported by the rest of the team.
