Its fur is waterproof, so it dries in an instant. It therefore never feels cold, even when it comes out of an icy sea.

General overview of Marill

Marill is an iconic second-generation Pokémon, introduced in the Johto region. Its English name is Marill and its Japanese name is マリル. It is often nicknamed the Aqua Mouse Pokémon due to its round appearance and large spherical tail. Marill is a Pokémon appreciated by players for its versatility early in the adventure and for its key role in certain Water teams.

Water and Fairy type since recent generations, Marill was initially exclusively Water type. This type change enhanced its battle interest, particularly against Fighting, Fire, and Dragon types. It is frequently encountered on routes near water, beaches, or damp grassy areas, making it easy to catch quite early in several versions.

Base stats and characteristics

Marill's stats are modest but well distributed for a base Pokémon. Its HP is decent for its level, allowing it to take several hits in battle. Its physical Attack is not exceptional in raw terms, but it becomes very interesting thanks to its ability and certain specific moves.

Its Defense and Special Defense remain average, which requires players to be careful about Grass and Electric moves. Its Speed is relatively low, but this drawback is often offset by good endurance and a decent strength early in the game.

Useful training data

  • Water and Fairy type

  • Good HP potential

  • Main weaknesses against Grass and Electric moves

  • EVs oriented primarily toward HP and Attack

Main moves and abilities

Marill has an interesting move pool for progressing through the adventure. It can learn classic Water moves like Water Gun or Aqua Tail, but also useful Ice moves against Grass and Dragon types. Certain Fighting or punch-type moves via TMs offer it additional coverage.

Thanks to its iconic ability, Marill can double its Attack power, making it much more dangerous than it appears. This particularity makes it a strategic choice in the early gyms and in battles against Trainers using Fire or Ground Pokémon.

Evolution and place in the Pokédex

Marill is the evolution of Azurill, its pre-evolution, and itself evolves into Azumarill from a certain level. This evolution considerably improves its HP, Attack, and overall endurance. Azumarill then becomes a cornerstone for many players, particularly in Diamond, Pearl, HeartGold, and SoulSilver versions.

In the Pokédex, Marill is described as a Pokémon capable of floating thanks to its oil-filled tail. This spherical extremity also serves as a float when it swims in rough water, which explains its frequent presence near rivers and beaches.

Utility for players and collectible cards

For players, Marill is an excellent choice early in the game thanks to its ease of capture on certain routes and its good resilience. It is often used as the basis of a Water team before reaching its evolved form. In battle, it brings a good balance between Defense and Attack, especially once well trained.

In the world of cards, Marill is regularly present in sets related to Johto or Water and Fairy types. Its cards often highlight its decent HP and simple but effective moves. Certain versions linked to Gold, Silver, or Sun and Moon are particularly sought after by collectors.
