General overview of Axew
Axew is a Dragon-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation. Its French name is Coupenotte and its Japanese name is キバゴ. This Pokémon is easily recognizable thanks to its small axe-shaped tusks located on either side of its mouth. In the Pokédex, Axew is described as a Pokémon that bravely uses its jaw and tail to attack opponents, even when it is still small in size.
Axew is particularly appreciated by players who wish to build a Dragon team from the start of the adventure. Despite modest stats at low levels, it has excellent evolutionary potential and quickly becomes formidable once well trained. Its main role is offensive, with a clear orientation toward physical damage.
Stats and battle potential
Axew's stats are centered on Attack, making it a very good choice for dealing fast damage in battle. Its HP remains decent for a Pokémon at its base stage, while its Defense and Special Defense are more limited, forcing the player to anticipate opposing attacks.
Decent HP to take a few hits
High Attack from the early levels
Average but exploitable Speed
Marked weaknesses to Ice, Fairy, and Dragon types
In terms of EVs, it is advisable to invest primarily in Attack and Speed to maximize offensive effectiveness. This distribution allows Axew to strike first and quickly apply pressure on opposing teams.
Evolution and place in the Pokédex
Axew evolves at a certain level into Fraxure, then reaches its final form Haxorus. This gradual evolution is very interesting for players who enjoy watching their Pokémon gain power step by step. In the Pokédex, Axew is classified as a pure Dragon-type Pokémon, giving it a clear identity and excellent synergy with Dragon-type attacks.
Its evolution considerably improves its stats, particularly Attack and HP, which transforms Axew into a genuine threat in the late game. For competitive players, starting with Axew allows building a solid Haxorus without relying on trades or complex items.
Moves, abilities, and useful moves
Axew has an interesting range of attacks oriented around the Dragon type and physical strikes. Its moves allow it to deal consistent damage while benefiting from abilities suited to direct combat.
Powerful Dragon moves learned through level-up
Fighting and Steel coverage moves via TMs
Abilities that enhance offensive pressure
When used well, Axew can surprise more resistant opponents thanks to its ability to chain attacks. However, it is important to protect it against its natural counters, particularly Fairy-type Pokémon, which are very present in recent generations such as Scarlet and Violet.
Axew in the Trading Card Game
In the Pokémon card game, Axew regularly appears as a Dragon Basic card. These cards are often used to set up the evolution toward Fraxure or Haxorus. Their attack cost remains low, making them easy to integrate into an evolution-oriented deck.
Axew cards are of most interest to collectors who appreciate the complete Dragon evolutionary line. Certain promotional or alternative versions can gain value depending on the set and the card's condition, particularly when they showcase its expressive eyes and recognizable design.
