General overview of Zigzagoon
Zigzagoon is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in the Hoenn region. It is known by the English name Zigzagoon and carries the Japanese name ジグザグマ. This small raccoon with unpredictable behaviour stands out for its zigzagging gait and its great curiosity towards objects found on the ground. In the Pokédex, Zigzagoon is often described as a nosy Pokémon that cannot help picking up everything that catches its eye, which directly influences its interest in battle and capture strategy.
Accessible from the very first levels of the adventure, Zigzagoon appears early in several games, making it a frequent choice for beginner Trainers. Its low catch rate and high encounter rate allow for quick integration into a team. Despite modest base stats, its decent Speed and useful utility moves give it real tactical value.
Type, forms and Pokédex data
In its classic Hoenn form, Zigzagoon is exclusively of the Normal type. It measures approximately 0.4 metres and weighs around 17.5 kg. This form emphasises Speed and mobility over raw Defense. The Pokédex highlights its raccoon instinct and erratic behaviour, which explains certain moves based on disrupting the opponent.
A regional form from Galar was introduced later, profoundly changing its battle role. This alternative version has a different type and a more aggressive orientation, but the Hoenn form remains the most used in classic games and on older Pokémon cards. Collectors particularly appreciate the marked visual difference between the two forms.
Base stats and EVs
Zigzagoon's base stats favour Speed at the expense of Defense. Its HP and Defense are low, making it vulnerable against powerful moves. However, its Speed EV yield is interesting for optimising certain teams focused on speed. It is often used as support rather than as a primary attacker.
Moves, abilities and battle use
Zigzagoon has a wide range of Normal-type moves and utility capabilities. It can learn moves such as Tackle, Quick Attack or Bite depending on the generation, allowing it to harass the opponent without staying exposed too long. Its main impact in battle often relies on pace rather than pure damage.
Its signature ability sometimes allows it to pick up items after a battle, making it extremely useful during exploration. This capability is very popular among players looking to accumulate resources without extra effort. Strategically, Zigzagoon is rarely used in advanced competitive battles, but it remains relevant early in the game.
Capture, level and progression
Zigzagoon is easily captured at a low level, often before level 20, on grassy routes near starting towns. Its high catch rate makes it accessible to all player profiles. It is particularly effective as a temporary team member thanks to its out-of-battle versatility.
Its evolution occurs quickly, which encourages Trainers to train it from the very first hours of the game. Even if its base form is not designed to last until the endgame, its practical utility more than compensates for its statistical limitations.
Zigzagoon in Pokémon cards
In the trading card game, Zigzagoon regularly appears as a basic card. These cards often highlight its simple moves and effects related to drawing or disruption. They are widely used in accessible or educational decks to learn the game's mechanics.
Versions from different generations present interesting design variations, notably between the Ruby, Sapphire and more recent series editions. For collectors, Zigzagoon remains a common but iconic card, perfectly representing the spirit of early-adventure Pokémon.
