General overview of Whismur
Whismur is a Normal type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. It is known as Whismur in English and as ゴニョニョ in Japanese. This Pokémon stands out for its extremely sensitive cry and its disproportionately large ears, capable of picking up the slightest sound around it. For players, Whismur represents an interesting base to evolve, particularly for building a team oriented around sound power and special attacks.
In the Pokédex, Whismur is described as a timid Pokémon that reacts strongly to loud sounds. In battle, this characteristic translates into early access to noise-based attacks, which are very useful against certain types of opponents. Its gentle appearance hides a real strategic potential once properly trained.
Type, stats, and base potential
Whismur is a Normal type Pokémon, which gives it interesting neutrality against many opposing types. Its base stats are relatively balanced for a first-stage Pokémon, with decent HP and a usable Special Attack from the early levels.
Its main stats remain modest but well distributed, which makes EV and IV training straightforward. Whismur can be oriented toward a special offensive role or used as a pre-evolution base. In battle, it remains fragile against Fighting attacks, but holds up reasonably well against simple strategies thanks to its versatility.
Moves, abilities, and battle strategy
Whismur quickly learns sound-based attacks such as Uproar, which becomes its signature move as it evolves. It can also use Pound, Echoed Voice, or Astonish, allowing it to deal consistent damage while disrupting the opponent. These moves have good accuracy and reasonable PP consumption.
Through TMs, Whismur can access a variety of moves such as Confuse Ray, Rest, or certain coverage attacks. In battle strategy, it is generally recommended to use it after evolution, but some players appreciate its effectiveness early in an adventure for surprising the enemy.
Evolution, level, and capture
Whismur evolves into Loudred starting at level 20, then into Exploud at level 40. This gradual evolution greatly increases its power and turns its cry into a true weapon of destruction. For patient trainers, investing time in Whismur is often rewarded.
Whismur's catch rate is relatively high, making it accessible even without many resources. It is frequently encountered in the starting areas of Hoenn, particularly in Ruby, Sapphire, and their remakes. This ease of encounter makes it an excellent choice for quickly completing the Pokédex.
Interest for Pokémon cards and players
In the trading card game, Whismur exists in several versions, often appreciated for their low cost and their usefulness in evolution-based decks. Cards highlighting its sound abilities are sought after by collectors wishing to complete the full evolutionary line.
For players, Whismur is above all a strategic base. Well trained in EVs and with good IVs, it becomes a solid asset once evolved. Its iconic cry, its striking description, and its spectacular evolution make it a Pokémon appreciated both in-game and in collections.
