Detailed information

Overview of Whirlipede

Whirlipede is a Pokémon of the Poison and Bug type introduced in the fifth generation. Its Japanese name is ホイーガ. It represents the middle stage of the evolutionary line that begins with Venipede. Whirlipede is known for its extremely durable shell and its strongly defensive role in the Unova Pokédex. It appears in a cylindrical form, capable of moving very quickly by rolling over itself, which strongly influences its gameplay.

In the Pokédex, Whirlipede is classified as the Curlipede Pokémon. Its high base Defense and decent Speed make it an interesting choice for stalling out battles and inflicting status conditions such as poison. It measures approximately 1.2 metres and weighs close to 58.5 kg, values consistent with its massive shell and its role as a physical wall.

Type, Weaknesses, and Resistances

Whirlipede has the dual type Poison and Bug. This combination grants it useful resistances against Fighting, Grass, Poison, and Bug types, making it effective against many physically oriented Pokémon. On the other hand, it remains vulnerable to Fire, Flying, Rock, and Psychic type moves, common threats that need to be anticipated when catching or using it in battle.

Its Poison type allows it to regularly poison opponents, while the Bug type gives it access to strategic moves focused on harassment and field control.

Base Stats and Strategic Orientation

Whirlipede's base stats clearly emphasise defence. Its strengths are its Defense and decent Speed, while its HP and Attack remain average. This distribution makes it a Pokémon more oriented towards defensive support than direct damage. It excels in battles where the goal is to slow down the opponent, set up Spikes, or deal residual damage.

Its nature strongly influences its effectiveness. A defensive or Speed-oriented nature is often preferred in order to maximise its ability to take hits and act before the opponent.

Learned Moves and Key Abilities

Whirlipede learns several important moves by levelling up. It has access to moves such as Poison Sting, Toxic, Spikes, and Protect, which reinforce its defensive role. Some moves are learned naturally, while others require TMs or a move tutor depending on the game version.

From intermediate levels such as level 20 or level 40, Whirlipede improves its field control and its ability to poison effectively. These moves are essential for preparing the field before a more powerful attacker joins the team.

Evolution and Acquisition

Whirlipede is the direct evolution of Venipede and itself evolves into Scolipede at a certain level. This evolution marks a radical shift, moving from a defensive role to a far more offensive profile. The timing of the evolution should therefore be considered according to the player's strategy.

It is generally available in the wild in certain areas of Unova, with an average catch rate. Its Shiny form also exists, recognisable by its altered colours, and is highly sought after by collectors and fans of rare Pokémon.

Value for Cards and Collection

In the Trading Card Game, Whirlipede is often represented as a defensive card, capable of slowing the opponent or improving the deck's durability. Its popularity remains decent among collectors, notably for Shiny versions or those from expansions tied to the Unova region. Its compact form and unique design make it a recognisable and appreciated Pokémon in a complete collection of its evolutionary line.
