General overview of Venipede
Venipede, known as Venipede in English and フシデ in Japanese, is a Bug and Poison-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation. It holds number 543 in the Pokédex and originates from the Unova region. This Pokémon is often encountered at a low level in grassy areas, making it a frequent choice for building a Poison-oriented team from the start.
Venipede stands out for its segmented body and its many legs, which allow it to move quickly. Despite its simple appearance, it has stats suited to a supporting offensive role in the early game. Its level of appearance is generally low, which makes it easy to capture and quickly integrate into a team.
Type and strategic weaknesses
Venipede's Bug and Poison typing grants it interesting resistances against Grass, Fighting, and Poison moves. It remains vulnerable, however, to Fire, Psychic, Flying, and Rock attacks. These weaknesses must be taken into account when battling Gym Leaders or in certain areas of the game.
Thanks to its Poison typing, Venipede can inflict status conditions from the very first levels, which is very useful for gradually wearing down more resilient opponents. This tactical role is particularly valued in prolonged battles.
Base stats and potential
Venipede's base stats are modest but consistent with a Pokémon found early in the journey. Its base HP are relatively low, but its decent Speed often allows it to attack first. Attack and Defense remain balanced without excelling, making it reliant on its effect-based moves.
At a low level, Venipede can surprise with its ability to deal steady damage through poison. Its potential increases mainly after evolution, but it provides a solid foundation for reaching Scolipede quickly.
Useful moves and abilities
Venipede learns several effective Poison and Bug moves for the early adventure. Among its notable moves are Poison Sting, Spikes, and Poison Jab depending on the level and available TMs. These moves allow it to poison the opponent or set up residual damage on the field.
Bug-type moves offer decent coverage against Psychic and Dark types. Even if raw power remains limited, the accumulation of effects makes Venipede a tactically interesting Pokémon.
Evolution and progression
Venipede evolves at level 22 into Whirlipede, before reaching its final form Scolipede at a higher level. This evolution line is appreciated for its significant gains in Defense and Speed.
For players looking to invest long-term, Venipede is a sound choice thanks to its steady power increase. It is advisable to evolve it quickly to compensate for its initially low HP.
Venipede in the games and cards
In Pokémon Black and White, Venipede is easily found in the wild, making it accessible to all players. Its encounter rate is relatively high in certain areas of Unova, reinforcing its role as an early Poison-type Pokémon.
On the card side, Venipede regularly appears in expansions related to the Unova region. Venipede cards are often common, with HP around 30 to 50, making them well-suited for fast Poison decks. They are sought after by collectors looking to complete the Scolipede evolution line.
