Overview of Sealeo
Sealeo is an Ice- and Water-type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. Its French name is Phogleur and its Japanese name is トドグラー. It is the direct evolution of Spheal and the intermediate form before Walrein. Sealeo is recognizable by its massive body, its rounded snout, and its ability to move on ice as well as in water.
In the Pokédex, Sealeo is described as a playful Pokémon, but one capable of defending itself effectively thanks to its robust body. For players, it represents an interesting evolution at a relatively accessible level, offering a good balance between moves, HP, and resistances. It is often used during the adventure in Hoenn games and their remakes.
Base stats and battle potential
Sealeo's base stats are oriented toward endurance. Its HP are decent for an intermediate-stage Pokémon, allowing it to last several turns in battle. Its Attack and Special Attack remain average but sufficient to effectively use its Ice- and Water-type moves.
Its Defense and Special Defense offer appreciable resistance against certain common types. On the other hand, its Speed is quite low, which often means playing Sealeo in a defensive or attrition-based role. Players mindful of Nature and EVs can improve its durability or reinforce its offensive impact depending on the chosen set.
Types, resistances, and weaknesses
Sealeo has a dual Ice and Water typing. This combination grants it several useful resistances, notably against Water- and Ice-type attacks. This makes it interesting in certain situations where these types are frequent.
In return, Sealeo has significant weaknesses, notably against Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Electric types. These weaknesses must be taken into account when building a team, especially in Trainer battles or raids.
Moves and level-up learning
Sealeo learns various moves as it levels up, combining Water-, Ice-, and Normal-type moves. These moves give it decent coverage during the adventure. Certain Ice moves are particularly useful for countering Ground- and Dragon-type Pokémon.
It can also learn moves via TM, which broadens its strategic arsenal. Charged Water-type moves are often favored for their reliability, while Ice moves provide excellent control against specific threats.
Evolution and how to obtain
Sealeo evolves from Spheal at a relatively low level, allowing players to obtain it quickly. It then evolves into Walrein starting at level 44, marking a clear improvement in its overall stats.
Sealeo's encounter rate depends on the game version, but it is generally accessible in maritime or icy areas. In Pokémon GO, it is available during certain events or under specific conditions, making it an interesting target for completing the Pokédex.
Interest for cards and collecting
In the Trading Card Game, Sealeo is often represented as an intermediate card with balanced stats. It generally serves as a transition toward more powerful cards, while remaining useful in certain Ice- or Water-oriented decks.
For collectors, Sealeo has several illustrations highlighting its jovial and massive appearance. These cards can vary in value depending on the expansion, condition, and rarity, making it a Pokémon appreciated both for play and for collecting.
