General overview of Tepig

Tepig is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation, in the Pokémon Black and Pokémon White versions. Its English name is Tepig and its Japanese name is ポカブ. This Pokémon is known as one of the starters of the Unova region, which gives it an important place in the Pokédex and in early-game strategies.

Tepig stands out for its appearance as a small pig capable of spewing flames from its snout. Despite its modest size, it has interesting battle potential thanks to its Fire type, which is very effective against Grass, Bug, and Steel types. For players, Tepig is often chosen for its ease of use and its balanced progression throughout the adventure.

Type and Pokédex data

Tepig is exclusively a Fire type. This type gives it increased damage against several common opponents early in the game, but also exposes it to notable weaknesses against Water, Ground, and Rock moves. In the Pokédex, Tepig is described as a Pokémon that uses its scorching breath to intimidate its enemies and defend itself.

In terms of size and weight, Tepig is a small and light Pokémon, which corresponds to its status as a base form. These characteristics do not directly influence competitive battle, but they contribute to its identity and its appeal for card collectors.

Stats and battle potential

Tepig's base stats are oriented toward Attack and HP. It has decent HP for a starter, allowing it to last several turns in battle. Its Attack is sufficient to deal solid damage with Fire moves from the first levels.

On the other hand, its Defense and Speed remain average. This pushes players toward an offensive playstyle, taking advantage of its powerful moves rather than trying to tank too long. In EV strategy, Tepig is generally optimized with investment in Attack and HP to maximize its effectiveness.

Evolution and level progression

Tepig evolves into Pignite starting from level 17, then into Emboar at level 36. This evolution line is highly appreciated, as it progressively transforms this small Fire Pokémon into a much more imposing and versatile fighter. Emboar gains the Fighting type, which completely changes its strategic role.

This gradual evolution lets players build a solid team from the very beginning of the adventure and keep Tepig through the advanced battles without losing effectiveness.

Moves and useful moves

Tepig naturally learns several effective Fire moves, ideal for exploiting its type. It can also access moves through TMs, which broadens its moveset. This allows it to cover certain weaknesses and adapt its style to the team's needs.

  • Fire moves to deal consistent damage

  • Normal moves for type coverage

  • Strategic TMs to improve its versatility

Appeal for the Pokémon Trading Card Game

In the card game, Tepig is a Pokémon appreciated by collectors, particularly as an iconic Unova starter. Tepig cards exist in several versions, ranging from common cards to more sought-after editions. They are often used in Fire-oriented decks focused on progressive power build-up.

For collectors, Tepig represents an excellent starting point for completing the evolution line up to Emboar, which is very popular in card series tied to Pokémon Black and White.
