Detailed information

Overview of Tentacruel

Tentacruel – known in Japanese as ドククラゲ (Dokukurage) – is a Pokémon highly appreciated by players for its dual Water and Poison typing, as well as its particular defensive role in many games. It is the direct evolution of Tentacool upon reaching a certain level, making it a natural option for bolstering a team in need of a solid aquatic pivot with strong resistances.

In the Pokédex, Tentacruel is described as a Pokémon equipped with numerous tentacles capable of seizing opponents and dealing significant poison damage. Its translucent body and red orbs recall a giant jellyfish, contributing to its iconic presence in the marine zones of Pokémon games. Its base stats show a fast Pokémon with decent bulk on the special side, often used to disrupt, slow down, or poison the opposing team.

Stats and strategic role

Tentacruel's stats center around high Speed, excellent Special Defense, and very solid HP. Its base HP is respectable and allows it to take multiple hits, especially from Water, Poison, Fairy, or Fire attacks. Strategically, Tentacruel is primarily used as a support Pokémon thanks to moves like Toxic, Toxic Spikes, or reliable Water attacks. Its ability to take Ice and Fire attacks is also an advantage depending on the generation.

In a classic strategic set, Tentacruel can serve as a cleaner thanks to Scald, Ice Beam, Sludge Bomb, or other Water and Poison-type attacks. It often boasts a Speed stat above the average defensive Pokémon, forcing the opponent to adapt. In battle, it frequently acts as a special wall or utility pivot capable of removing entry hazards set by the enemy while threatening with its poison.

Evolution and obtaining in games

Tentacruel is the evolution of Tentacool and becomes available in most games once its pre-evolution reaches the appropriate level. It is encountered very frequently at sea, on beaches, or in deep water areas. In Pokémon GO, Tentacruel appears in certain aquatic zones and can reach an interesting max CP for intermediate leagues, thanks to its good endurance.

Depending on the generation, it can also be obtained via trading, breeding, or wild sea encounters. Its Shiny form slightly changes its body color, making it appear more green or darker depending on the version, which is sought after by collectors.

Moves, abilities, and compatibilities

Tentacruel gains access to many useful moves as it levels up. It naturally masters various Water and Poison moves, but also Ice Beam, one of the most widely used attacks against Dragon, Ground, or Flying Pokémon across all games. It can also learn several important TMs depending on the generation, such as Surf, Scald, Sludge Bomb, Water Pulse, or Protect.

In addition, its access to utility moves like Toxic Spikes or Rapid Spin in certain generations reinforces its role as a strategic support. Its balanced defensive values allow it to hold its own against many special attackers, which explains its popularity in the strategic profiles of many players.

Pokémon TCG and collecting

Tentacruel appears in several Pokémon card expansions. The most sought-after versions include those highlighting its tentacles and threatening appearance. Cards can feature different styles: defensive, oriented toward raw power, or based on poisoning, which reflects its in-game role well.

Whether to complete your Pokédex, build a solid strategy, or enrich a poison-based deck, Tentacruel is a Pokémon available across several expansion sets and appreciated for its unique identity.
