Detailed information

Overview of Tentacool

The Pokémon Tentacool, known in Japanese as メノクラゲ (Menokurage), is a Water and Poison type Pokémon that appears very frequently in games, especially when crossing the sea or water channels. It often appears at low levels, making it a typical encounter for any Trainer exploring maritime routes such as Route 12, Seafoam Islands, or sea channels. Its blue body, almost entirely composed of water, and its two red orbs make it an easily recognizable Pokémon in the Pokédex.

Tentacool has a gelatinous, translucent form, well adapted for floating at the surface or just below. Thanks to its flexible tentacles, it can unleash formidable Poison or Water attacks such as Acid, Bubble Beam, or Wrap. Its light frame allows it to move with great agility in the sea. Fishermen and Trainers encounter it mainly near coasts, around islands, and in all maritime areas of the Pokémon games, including Red, Blue, and Diamond.

Useful information for players

In most games, Tentacool is a simple Pokémon to catch but very useful on a Water/Poison team. With a solid base Special Defense and access to many Water attacks, it can take hits reasonably well and deal consistent damage. Its HP remains modest, but its status moves and poison attacks more than compensate. It becomes truly interesting when you want to use moves like Aurora Beam (Ice-type attacks in certain generations), Water Pulse, or the indispensable Acid.

It is also a Pokémon well suited for crossing the map thanks to its compatibility with several HMs or TMs depending on the generation. In certain titles, it can learn Surf, making it easy to navigate through water areas and increasing its utility outside of battle.

Evolution and level progression

Tentacool evolves at level 30 into Tentacruel, a much larger Pokémon with a crystalline body, longer tentacles, and significantly increased power. Its evolution grants it a far more solid Defense, more HP, and access to enhanced Water and Poison attacks.

To optimize a Tentacool, it is recommended to level it up by regularly using it against other Water or Poison Pokémon, accumulating experience without taking too much risk. It steadily grows in power and quickly becomes a reliable ally in sea battles or against opponents weak to Water or Poison damage.

Tentacool in games and the Pokémon TCG

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Tentacool appears in several expansions, often with illustrations highlighting its luminous rays, its translucent body, or its venom attacks. Some cards focus more on its defensive side while others favor its Water and Poison attacks. The most sought-after versions are generally those offering good base HP and a persistent Poison attack.

In the main games, it is primarily encountered on maritime routes, in bays, near islands, or by the sea. A simple encounter or a fishing session is usually enough to catch one. Tentacool remains one of the most iconic Pokémon of aquatic zones thanks to its frequent appearance and its classic role as a Water/Poison Pokémon across all generations.
