General overview of Teddiursa
Teddiursa is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in the Johto region. Its Japanese name is Himeguma. This small bear is easily recognizable thanks to the crescent moon on its forehead, an iconic detail often highlighted in the Pokédex. Teddiursa is a Pokémon appreciated by players for its offensive potential early in the game and for its formidable evolution.
In the main games, Teddiursa often appears at a relatively low level, making it an excellent choice for a team in progress. It is notably attracted to honey, a key element for increasing its encounter rate in certain versions. Its base stat spread clearly emphasizes Attack, at the expense of Defense and Speed.
Stats and base characteristics
Teddiursa's stats perfectly reflect its role as a physical attacker. Its Attack is high for a Pokémon at this stage of the adventure, allowing it to deal heavy damage with claw-type moves or direct hits. Its Defense remains average and its HP is decent without being exceptional.
Type: Normal
High base Attack for a small Pokémon
Average Defense and limited Speed
National Pokédex number: 216
Thanks to these values, Teddiursa is often used as a pure offensive Pokémon. It can surprise certain enemies early on in league battles or against secondary trainers.
Moves, attacks, and important TMs
Teddiursa has a wide range of Attack-oriented moves. Its immediate moves include raw-power hits, ideal for exploiting its offensive potential. It quickly learns moves such as Scratch, Bite, and Lick, the latter providing coverage against the Ghost type.
Via TMs, Teddiursa can access powerful moves such as Cross Chop, Crunch, and Earthquake depending on the generation. These moves enhance its battle effectiveness and considerably improve its damage output. Its move set can be adapted according to nature and invested EVs, which are often focused on Attack and HP.
Evolution and use in battle
Teddiursa evolves into Ursaring from a certain level onward, an evolution that drastically increases its base stats, particularly Attack and HP. This evolution transforms the small bear into a very dangerous Pokémon in physical combat. In certain recent versions, an alternative form linked to night and the moon can also be exploited strategically.
In battle, Teddiursa must avoid Fighting-type opponents, against which it is highly vulnerable. Rock and Steel types can also pose problems depending on available moves. On the other hand, it fares very well against Ghost types thanks to Crunch and against Grass or Ice types with appropriate moves.
Capture, breeding, and trading cards
Teddiursa's catch rate is relatively reasonable, especially when encountered at a low level. The use of honey greatly increases the chances of finding it in certain specific areas. It is often available in the tall grass or forests of Johto, making it an accessible Pokémon.
When breeding, Teddiursa belongs to the Field egg group. It can pass down several interesting moves, which is useful for optimizing a competitive profile. On the card side, Teddiursa regularly appears in the Pokémon TCG, often as a common or uncommon card, appreciated for its small bear design and its connection to Ursaring.
Strengths, weaknesses, and strategic interest
Teddiursa's primary strength lies in its Attack and its versatility via TMs. It is ideal for players looking for a simple, effective, and evolutive Pokémon. Its weaknesses against Fighting types and its lack of Defense must however be compensated through good anticipation of counters and careful team placement.
