General overview of Taillow

Taillow is a Pokémon of the Normal and Flying type introduced in the third generation. It is known as Taillow in English and スバメ in Japanese. This Pokémon is often encountered very early in the adventure, notably in the Hoenn region, making it a frequent option for building a starting team focused on Speed and physical attacks.

Taillow belongs to the Tiny Swallow Pokémon category. Despite its frail appearance, it stands out for a combative temperament and the ability to hold its own against more powerful enemies. For players, it represents an excellent temporary or evolutionary choice, while collectors have access to several affordable but sought-after cards depending on the set.

Type, role and in-game usage

Thanks to its dual Normal and Flying typing, Taillow benefits from an immunity to Ground attacks, which is particularly useful during the first battles against Trainers or wild Pokémon. However, it remains vulnerable to Electric, Ice and Rock attacks — important weaknesses to anticipate when building a team.

In battle, Taillow is oriented toward Attack and Speed. It excels at fast strategies aimed at striking first. Its playstyle suits players who favor offense and constant pressure, even though its Defense and HP remain limited.

Base stats

Taillow's base stats reflect its role as a fast and aggressive Pokémon. Its high Speed often lets it attack before opponents, while its solid Attack ensures satisfying damage output early in the game.

  • Relatively low HP and Defense

Attacks, abilities and evolution

Taillow quickly learns Flying and Normal type attacks, ideal for making use of its STAB. Moves like Quick Attack or Peck increase its effectiveness against many enemies encountered on Hoenn's routes. Access to certain TMs also allows it to broaden its offensive set.

Its ability Reckless, depending on the generation, accentuates its bold and aggressive nature. This ability is particularly valued in strategies based on calculated risk-taking, although Taillow remains fragile against well-placed counters.

It evolves into Swellow starting at level 22, an evolution that greatly increases its battle potential. This transformation is often sought by players who want to maintain a fast and powerful aerial presence on their team.

Taillow in the Pokédex and game versions

In the Pokédex, Taillow is described as a courageous Pokémon that does not hesitate to challenge opponents bigger than itself. It is frequently found on routes such as Route 116 in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, making it an accessible catch.

It is also present in many subsequent generations, including Diamond, Pearl, Sun, Moon, Black and White, which reinforces its recognition among regular players of the franchise. Its constant presence contributes to its status as a familiar Pokémon.

Trading Cards and collector interest

Taillow has several cards from different expansions. These cards generally highlight its quick attack and low energy cost, making them playable in certain speed-oriented decks. For collectors, Taillow cards remain affordable while effectively completing Hoenn-centered collections.

Certain alternate versions or cards from specific sets attract more attention, especially when they feature dynamic artwork or a direct link to its evolution. Taillow is thus an interesting Pokémon both for play and for collecting.
