General overview of Swellow

Swellow is a Pokémon of the Normal and Flying type, widely appreciated by players for its offensive style and high Speed. Its English name is Swellow and its Japanese name is オオスバメ. It is the final evolution of Taillow and perfectly embodies the role of a fast attacker in many teams. Present since the third generation, Swellow remains a popular choice both in competitive battles and in the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

Type and battle role

Swellow has the dual Normal and Flying typing, which gives it solid offensive coverage but also clear weaknesses to Electric, Ice and Rock attacks. In return, it benefits from a total immunity to the Ground type, which can be decisive in certain battles. Its main role is that of a fast physical sweeper, capable of striking first and putting constant pressure on the opponent.

Thanks to its naturally high Speed, Swellow excels in battles where initiative is paramount. It is often used to finish off weakened enemies or to force switches in the opponent's team.

Base stats and EVs

Swellow's base stats are oriented toward Attack and Speed. Its Attack allows it to fully exploit its physical moves, while its Speed gives it an advantage over many Pokémon at the same tier. On the other hand, its HP and Defense remain low, leaving it vulnerable to powerful attacks or priority moves.

  • High Attack to deal heavy damage

  • Very high Speed to move first

  • Modest defenses requiring good anticipation

In terms of EVs, Swellow is generally optimized with a maximum investment in Attack and Speed. This choice reinforces its pure offensive role and maximizes its potential in competitive play.

Key attacks and moves

Swellow has a wide selection of physical attacks and powerful Flying type moves. It can learn attacks such as Brave Bird, Return or Facade, which take full advantage of its base Attack. Boomburst can be used earlier in the adventure but quickly becomes obsolete compared to stronger attacks.

Available TMs and HMs allow Swellow to adapt to different playstyles. It can thus surprise certain opponents and cover specific types depending on the team's needs.

Abilities and strategic use

The ability Guts is one of Swellow's main assets. It increases the power of its physical attacks when it is afflicted by a status condition, sometimes turning a disadvantage into a genuine offensive force. This mechanic is particularly appreciated in strategies based on calculated risk-taking.

When used well, Swellow becomes a constant threat in the sky of battle. It does, however, require a good read of the game, as a misplacement can quickly cost it dearly against well-prepared counters.

Presence in the games and Pokémon Trading Card Game

Swellow is available in many versions such as Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black and White, as well as their sequels and remakes. It can be encountered on various routes after evolving Taillow, particularly in open or aerial areas.

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Swellow is often depicted in full flight, highlighting its Speed and aggression. Certain Swellow Pokémon cards are sought after for their dynamic artwork and their good synergy in fast attack-oriented decks.

Breeding and progression

Breeding Swellow produces Taillow, which makes it easy to optimize IVs and natures such as Jolly or Timid depending on the strategy chosen. This step is important for players looking to get the most out of this Pokémon in advanced battles.

Thanks to its fast progression and its effectiveness from the mid-game onward, Swellow remains an excellent choice to accompany a player throughout their journey, all the way to the most demanding battles.
