Detailed information

General overview of Shiftry

Shiftry is a Grass and Dark type Pokémon, known in Japanese as ダーテング. It represents the final form of the evolutionary line beginning with Seedot, then Nuzleaf, and stands out for a highly aggressive combat style focused on attack and speed. Shiftry is heavily inspired by forest spirits and ancient trees, which is reflected both in its design and in its offensive capabilities.

In the Pokédex, Shiftry is described as a Pokémon that lives in the deep forest, capable of unleashing violent gusts of wind and striking its opponents with sharp leaves. Its evolution requires the use of a Sun Stone on Nuzleaf, making it particularly reliant on items available in each version.

Type, weaknesses and resistances

The Grass type combined with the Dark type gives Shiftry a distinctive defensive profile. It resists moves of the Water, Grass, Ground and Ghost types well, but is highly vulnerable to Fire, Fighting, Bug, Ice, Fairy and Poison type attacks. In strategic play, it is therefore essential to anticipate counters and avoid opponents capable of dealing heavy physical or special damage in those categories.

This type combination makes Shiftry formidable against certain defensive Pokémon, but fragile against fast Fire or Fighting type sweepers.

Base stats and battle orientation

Shiftry's base stats clearly emphasize Attack and Speed. Its high Attack lets it exploit moves like Leaf Blade or Razor Leaf effectively, while its decent Speed often gives it the initiative in battle. On the other hand, its HP and Defense remain modest, making it susceptible to powerful attacks if it does not strike first.

Competitively, Shiftry is often used as a physical or mixed attacker, capable of surprising opponents with Dark or Grass type attacks depending on the situation.

Moves and key abilities

Shiftry has a wide selection of moves oriented toward direct damage and offensive pressure. Grass type moves like Leaf Blade, Leaf Storm or Giga Drain allow it to take advantage of its primary type. On the Dark side, Dark Pulse, Nasty Plot or Sucker Punch reinforce its potential against Psychic and Ghost type Pokémon.

It can also learn useful coverage moves via TM, such as Snarl, Hurricane or Focus Blast, which complicates predicting its sets in competitive play.

Evolution, obtaining and availability

Shiftry is obtained exclusively by evolving Nuzleaf with a Sun Stone. This evolution does not depend on level, which allows you to optimize the exact moment of the transformation in order to learn certain moves before evolving. In several generations, Shiftry is available in forested areas or through trading, with a low wild encounter rate.

In games set in the Hoenn region, such as Ruby and Sapphire, it is particularly appreciated for its versatility and highly offensive battle style.

Interest for the Pokémon TCG

In the Pokémon TCG, Shiftry is often depicted as a fast and aggressive Pokémon, with attacks dealing high damage or disrupting the opponent's strategy. Some cards highlight its natural blades and its connection to trees, making it a sought-after card among collectors who appreciate Grass type Pokémon with a dark and menacing design.

Its popularity remains stable thanks to its striking appearance and its iconic role within its evolutionary line.
