General overview of Shellos

Shellos is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in the fourth generation. Its English name is Shellos and its Japanese name is カラナクシ (Karanakushi). It is known for its two distinct forms tied to the region, making it a particularly interesting Pokémon for players who pay attention to the Pokédex and visual differences.

Shellos holds number 422 in the National Pokédex. It is recognizable by its soft, undulating body, adapted to marine and humid environments. This Pokémon lives mainly near coastlines, in shallow seas or muddy areas, which directly influences its abilities and battle style.

Forms and regional traits

Shellos has two distinct forms with no impact on its stats or moves. The West Sea form features pink and purple hues, while the East Sea form sports blue and green colors. Which form appears depends solely on the capture location in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

These forms do not affect power, nature, or evolution rate. They are nonetheless highly sought after by card collectors and players who want a visually complete Pokédex.

Stats and battle potential

Shellos has modest stats, typical of a first-stage Pokémon. Its defensive potential is decent thanks to a reasonable Special Defense, but its Speed and Special Attack remain limited. At low levels, it is mainly used as a support or to soak up damage.

At maximum level, Shellos quickly shows its limits against more offensive opponents. Its main appeal in battle lies in its ability to evolve quickly into a more robust Pokémon.

Available moves and abilities

As a Water-type Pokémon, Shellos naturally learns several moves tied to water and mud. It can use moves such as Water Gun, Mud-Slap, or Sandstorm depending on the version. These moves provide good coverage early in the game.

Shellos can also learn certain moves via TMs, which allows its power or defense to be slightly improved. Its move pool is, however, oriented toward a defensive role rather than an offensive one.

Evolution and strategic value

Shellos evolves into Gastrodon starting at level 30. This evolution considerably improves its overall stats, particularly its Defense and Special Attack. For players, it is therefore recommended to evolve Shellos as soon as possible in order to optimize its effectiveness in battle.

The evolution retains the West Sea or East Sea form, a detail appreciated by fans of visual consistency and collecting.

Shellos in games and cards

Shellos is available in several games in the franchise, notably Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, and Scarlet. It often appears in coastal areas or after a storm, reinforcing its connection to aquatic environments.

In the Trading Card Game, Shellos is generally represented as a basic card with simple attacks and low power. These cards are mainly prized by collectors or used in Water-themed decks.

Additional useful information

Shellos measures approximately 0.3 m and weighs 6.3 kg. It can be male or female, with no difference in stats. Its catch rate is relatively high, making it easy to add to a team quickly at the start of an adventure.

Thanks to its role as a stepping stone toward a more powerful evolution, Shellos remains a well-regarded Pokémon for its versatility and distinctive design.
