General overview of Gastrodon
Gastrodon is a Water and Ground-type Pokémon, known in English as Gastrodon and in Japanese as トリトドン. It is the direct evolution of Shellos, an iconic Pokémon from the Sinnoh region, appreciated for its durability in battle and its strategic versatility. Gastrodon is listed in the Pokédex as a Pokémon capable of adapting to varied environments, ranging from beaches to rough seabeds, thanks to its supple and resistant body structure.
This Pokémon stands out for its two main forms, West Sea and East Sea, which affect only its visual appearance without modifying its stats or type. Weighing several kilograms, Gastrodon has a massive body and a naturally high Defense, making it an excellent choice for absorbing opposing attacks, particularly in extended battles.
Gastrodon's stats and type
Gastrodon combines the Water and Ground types, a very interesting combination from a defensive standpoint. This combination grants it a total immunity to Electric-type attacks and good resistance to Fire, Steel, and Rock types. In contrast, its main weakness remains the Grass type, which can put it in serious difficulty with powerful attacks.
Its base stats clearly emphasize Defense and HP, while its Special Attack remains decent for dealing consistent damage. Its Speed is low, but this drawback is often offset by its ability to hold the field and wear down the opponent over time.
Abilities, talents, and moves
Gastrodon has very useful abilities in strategic combat. Its best-known ability allows it to benefit from opposing Water-type attacks by recovering HP, further reinforcing its role as a defensive wall. In battle, it excels at using moves like Earthquake, an extremely powerful and reliable Ground-type attack.
It can also learn Water-type attacks such as Water Pulse or Waterfall, as well as support moves like Amnesia or Curse, respectively improving its Special Defense or its strength. Access to several TMs and HMs allows it to adapt to different playstyles, whether as a slow offensive threat or as a control Pokémon.
Use in battle and weaknesses
In battle, Gastrodon is often used as an effective counter to many popular Fire, Steel, or Poison-type Pokémon. Its ability to absorb hits and respond with solid immediate attacks makes it a safe choice, both in solo play and in strategic battle.
Its main weakness remains Grass-type attacks, often fatal if not anticipated. It is therefore recommended to pair it with Pokémon capable of handling this type of threat. Despite this, Gastrodon remains a reliable choice, notably in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Black, White, Scarlet, and Violet.
Gastrodon in games and cards
In Pokémon GO, Gastrodon is appreciated for its durability during raid or league battles, even if its low Speed limits its offensive potential. On trading cards, it is often depicted as a sturdy Pokémon focused on defense and damage storage, faithfully reflecting its role in the video games.
Thanks to its evolution from Shellos and its distinct forms, Gastrodon remains a memorable Pokémon from Sinnoh, both for strategic players and for collectors who pay attention to the diversity of forms and illustrations.
