General overview of Shellder

Shellder, known as Shellder in English and シェルダー in Japanese, is a Water type Pokémon highly appreciated in the Pokédex for its exceptional Defense and robust shell. This bivalve has a very wide tongue and a body protected by a firm shell, making it a useful companion for players looking for a resilient Pokémon right from the early routes. Its Pokédex entries often state that its shell can become incredibly hard, reinforcing its natural role as a tank on a team. Its number in the national Pokédex places it in the first generation, giving it an important position in both classic and modern games. Players sometimes encounter it via fishing, on an island, or in maritime areas where its capture depends on the encounter rate.

Base characteristics and statistics

In terms of stats, Shellder shines primarily in Defense. Its base Defense is one of the highest among small Water Pokémon, which compensates for fairly low HP. Its weight is around a few kilograms and its small size places it in the category of bivalve Pokémon. Players looking to maximize its EVs in Defense or Special Attack will often use it in combination with Ice moves like Ice Shard or Water moves like Water Pulse. Although it is a Pokémon vulnerable to Electric and Grass types, it remains useful thanks to its tanking potential and ability to withstand direct damage.

Types, resistances and weaknesses

Shellder is a pure Water Pokémon in most generations, which grants it several useful resistances in battle, notably against Fire and Ice. However, it is vulnerable to Grass and Electric type attacks. Its shell protects its body and gives it an important defensive advantage in the early phases of the game. In certain games, it can also learn Ice moves, allowing it to hit Pokémon weak to that type. Players therefore take advantage of this dual Water and Ice role to catch opponents off guard.

Evolution and leveling up

Shellder evolves using a Water Stone, which yields a far more powerful and versatile Pokémon: its direct evolution strengthens its attacks and its already impressive Defense. The evolution is instantaneous and does not depend on a specific level. Before evolving, Shellder learns several interesting moves like Tackle, Sing, Water Pulse, and sometimes improved Ice moves. Players often wait until it has learned its best moves before using the stone to obtain a stronger version.

Available moves and abilities

As it levels up, Shellder can learn various Water and Ice moves. The most common attacks include Water Pulse, Ice Shard, and certain moves that can be taught via TM. Its base set allows players to exploit its high Defense and catch opponents off guard with formidable Ice hits for such a small Pokémon. In recent games, Shellder can also benefit from new Water moves that strengthen its presence in raids and strategic battles.

Capture, locations and useful information

To catch Shellder, players often use a fishing rod or head to maritime areas such as certain routes, beaches, or the Cinnabar Island coast. The catch rate depends on the game, but it is generally easy to obtain. Shellder exists in both male and female forms, with little visual difference between the two. Pokémon GO players can also encounter it in areas near water and evolve it using the dedicated Candy. Shellder is an interesting Pokémon for completing your Pokédex, improving your early-game team, or aiming for a powerful evolution. Its simple but defensive design allows it to remain a safe choice in many situations.
