Detailed information

General Overview of Cloyster

Cloyster is a Water and Ice type Pokémon, known in Japanese as シェルダー. It is the direct evolution of Shellder when exposed to a Water Stone. In the Pokédex, Cloyster is described as a bivalve whose body is completely enclosed in a tough, spike-covered shell. This shell allows it to protect itself from overly aggressive opponents multiple times, and its eyes, visible through the opening, give it a menacing appearance. Players most remember its exceptionally high Defense, which makes it a natural wall against many physical moves, even Fighting type ones. Its purple form and giant clamshell design make it an immediately recognizable Pokémon for trainers of all generations.

Stats and Useful Information in the Games

Cloyster has stats focused on Defense and Attack, a very useful combination for building strategies around chip damage and progressive pressure. Its base Defense is one of the highest among Water and Ice type Pokémon, allowing it to withstand a large amount of physical damage. However, its HP remains limited, so items or partner Pokémon capable of supporting its endurance will be needed. The Ice type exposes it to Fire, Fighting, Rock and Steel attacks, but its Water typing helps reduce some of those weaknesses. In battle, it can play the role of an excellent blocker or finisher thanks to its spike and pin moves.

Moves, Levels and TM Moves

In the main games, Cloyster learns various moves focused on spikes, frost and water as it levels up. It has access to Water Pulse, Aurora Beam and Spike Cannon to apply constant pressure on opponents. At higher levels, it can use Ice Beam, a signature move of Ice type Pokémon, very effective against Grass or Dragon opponents. Through TMs, it can also learn Toxic or coverage moves to broaden its set. Players enjoy building an EV spread to optimize its investment, primarily in Defense and Speed if they want to make it more reactive than expected.

Evolution, Form and Characteristics

Cloyster evolves from Shellder via a Water Stone, a simple mechanic that lets trainers evolve it whenever they choose. Its final form is a hardened shell that has closed around the inside of the Pokémon, leaving only a dark core visible at the center. This shell reinforces its resistance and boosts the power of its physical moves like Pin Missile. Its protruding spikes also give it an intimidating appearance against wild aggressors. Its size and considerable weight classify it among the most imposing bivalve Pokémon, making it a perfect choice for players who enjoy durable tanks.

Battle Use and Strategies

Players often use Cloyster to apply pressure from the start of a battle with spike moves or multi-hit attacks. Its set can include moves like Rapid Spin in certain games, useful for removing entry hazards, or ice barrage moves that hit multiple times. With its solid Defense, it can absorb a significant number of hits before hitting back with power. Its Nature can be chosen to increase Speed or Special Defense to compensate for its natural weaknesses. Although vulnerable to Fire and Ground, it remains a valuable asset when you know how to manage its shell and resistances.

Pokémon Card Information

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Cloyster often appears with a defensive role or with high-cost but powerful attacks. Recent sets highlight its purple diamond form and sharp spikes. Some editions feature attacks dealing damage in multiple instances, recalling its pins and its ability to pierce opposing defenses. Players gladly collect alternative versions, particularly those with a white or shiny effect around its shell. Cloyster cards in English and French are among the popular Water and Ice Pokémon appreciated in control-oriented decks.
