General overview of Scraggy

Scraggy is a Pokémon of the Fighting and Dark types, introduced in the fifth generation. Its English name is Scraggy and its Japanese name is ズルッグ (Zuruggu). This Pokémon is known for its distinctive appearance, with loose skin that it constantly pulls up around its head — a detail that directly influences certain battle mechanics. In the Pokédex, Scraggy is described as a cunning fighter that uses its head, fists, and feet to deal effective damage despite a moderate Speed.

For players, Scraggy represents an interesting choice in the early and mid-game thanks to its balanced stats and its access to many moves through leveling and TMs. It appears in several Black and White versions, with a decent encounter rate in certain Unova areas, making it a relatively accessible Pokémon.

Typing, weaknesses, and resistances

Scraggy has the dual Fighting and Dark typing. This combination grants it useful resistances against Ghost-, Rock-, and Dark-type moves, while giving it strong offensive potential against Psychic-, Ice-, and Steel-type opponents. On the other hand, it remains vulnerable to Fairy-, Fighting-, and Flying-type moves, which must be considered when building a team.

Its thick skin allows it to absorb several physical hits, especially when trained with EVs oriented toward Defense and HP. In strategic battles, it can serve as a pivot to soak up certain damage before counter-attacking.

Base stats and progression

Scraggy's base stats focus on Attack and Defense, with decent HP and average Speed. This distribution makes it effective in close-range combat but less efficient against very fast opponents. IVs play an important role in optimizing its potential, particularly in Attack and Defense.

As it levels up, Scraggy learns powerful moves based on punching, kicking, and sometimes tailing, reinforcing its direct fighting style. Its evolution further increases its power and bulk, making it a solid choice for the mid- and late-game.

Moves, attacks, and TMs

Scraggy has a wide range of physical moves. It naturally learns Fighting- and Dark-type hits capable of dealing consistent damage. Some moves inflict status effects or lower the opponent's Defense, which is useful against tougher enemies.

Through TMs, it can access Fire-, Poison-, Steel-, and Ice-type moves, considerably expanding its offensive coverage. Moves such as Protect and Facade also give it tactical options to stall or catch the opponent off guard. Its ability to use different moves depending on the target makes it adaptable in many battles.

Combat use and training

In battle, Scraggy excels in prolonged fights where it can take advantage of its Defense and physical strength. It is often used as a physical attacker with a set focused on Attack and HP, while maintaining enough Defense to take hits. Recommended EVs generally prioritize Attack and Defense, though a slight Speed investment can be considered.

In the Black and White versions, it fits well into a balanced team and can handle many types thanks to its varied moves. Even in Pokémon GO or in more collection-oriented formats, Scraggy remains appreciated for its distinctive design and its presence on certain cards, which reinforces its appeal for both players and collectors.
