General Overview of Rhyhorn

Rhyhorn is a Ground and Rock-type Pokémon, known in Japanese as サイホーン. It appears as early as the first generation and stands out for its massive body and very powerful horn. The Pokédex often describes Rhyhorn as a Pokémon that is difficult to control, making it a popular choice for Trainers looking for a sturdy fighter from the early levels.

Weighing well over 100 kg with an impressive size, Rhyhorn quickly establishes its presence on the battlefield. Its HP and overall stats favour defence and longevity over speed. In the games, it is often found in rocky or desert areas, sometimes in sunny weather. Its catch rate varies depending on the version, and in Pokémon GO it requires a certain number of specific Candies to evolve.

Type, Stats, and Useful Information

Rhyhorn is a Ground and Rock type, a dual typing that offers powerful resistance to Fire and Poison attacks, but leaves it weak to Water, Grass, Ice, and Fighting. For strategic players, its strengths rely on high Defence and an ability to take multiple hits, especially during a Raid or against Electric-type Pokémon.

Its base stats highlight its physical power. Tackle is one of its most iconic moves, capable of dealing significant damage, sometimes with recoil. A Trainer can also exploit other moves that cause the opponent to faint, particularly Ground-type moves that benefit from STAB.

Evolution and Key Levels

Rhyhorn evolves into Rhydon when it reaches a certain level, and this evolution brings a notable increase in power and Defence. In some generations, a further evolution exists via a specific item, but here the key point is that Rhyhorn progresses slowly, with a peak in effectiveness around level 20 and then level 50 depending on your strategy.

It is possible to obtain a male or female Rhyhorn in most games, and breeding makes it possible to obtain an Egg for this Pokémon by using the correct Egg Group. Its Nature can direct its physical power or reinforce its Defence, depending on your team's needs.

Moves, Abilities, and Level-Up Movepool

Rhyhorn's moves focus mainly on Ground type, Rock type, and occasionally Steel type. As it gains levels, Rhyhorn learns increasingly powerful moves, some of which are only available via TM or via Move Tutors.

  • Ground moves: useful against Electric, Rock, or Steel Pokémon.

  • Rock moves: often used to cover Flying or Ice Pokémon.

  • Powerful physical moves: Tackle, Horn Attack, and other high-impact strikes.

In recent games, moves such as Ice-type moves are sometimes accessible via TM, allowing for a varied and effective set. The Trainer simply needs to manage the Pokémon's very low Speed, compensated by its excellent bulk.

Rhyhorn in Pokémon GO

In Pokémon GO, Rhyhorn is a common choice in low-level Raids. Players need to gather a precise number of Candies to evolve it, and the chances of obtaining a stronger version depend on the in-game weather, particularly Rock or Ground conditions. With a suitable set, Rhyhorn can deal good damage, especially against Electric types.

Held Items, Nature, and Usage Tips

Even though Rhyhorn may seem straightforward to play, it is important to give it the right held item, such as one that boosts its physical power or reduces super effective damage. Players looking to optimise its performance will primarily focus on its Defence, HP, and combat stats.

On a team, Rhyhorn often acts as a physical wall or tank, absorbing several attacks to give the rest of your team room to set up. Its great size and power make it an excellent choice for Trainers who appreciate a direct and robust playstyle.
