Detailed information

General overview of Weezing

Weezing is a Poison-type Pokémon particularly known for its great bulk and its ability to spread toxic gases. Its Japanese name is Matadogas. It is the evolution of Koffing, which generally occurs at a certain level in the main games. Thanks to its gas-filled body and multiple venting points, Weezing often serves on defensive teams to absorb physical damage and disrupt opposing strategies with its moves based on smog, sludge, and status conditions.

Useful information for players

In the Pokédex, Weezing is generally listed with a number close to its pre-evolution Koffing. It weighs around 9.5 kg and stands close to 1.2 m tall, though this may vary slightly across generations. Its description often highlights the toxic gases it accumulates and redistributes through its two fused bodies.

Its main ability remains Levitate in most games, removing its Ground weakness and strengthening its defensive options. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it also retains this identity as a Poison tank capable of disrupting opponents with control moves. Weezing also has a Galarian regional form of the Poison and Fairy type, opening up new combinations and a more versatile role on certain teams.

Stats and battle role

Its base stats emphasize very high Defense, followed by decent HP for a Pokémon of this style. Its Special Defense is acceptable, but it is primarily its physical bulk that defines its reputation. Its Attack and Special Attack can vary by version, but it remains more of a survival-oriented Pokémon than a raw power attacker. Players often optimize its EVs in Defense or HP depending on their strategy.

Recommended moves and abilities

Weezing benefits from a wide range of Poison moves like Toxic, Sludge, and Smog, as well as useful options such as Haze to reset opponent boosts, Will-O-Wisp to lower the physical Attack of opponents, or Explosion for a brutal final impact. It can also learn Fire or Ghost moves depending on the version, which helps counter certain troublesome types.

Evolution and breeding

Weezing is the direct evolution of Koffing, generally through leveling up. It can be found as either male or female, though this only affects breeding. Eggs produced hatch into Koffing, allowing players to rebuild a line with better values or inherited moves.

Weezing in the Pokémon games

In classic generations like Kanto, Weezing often appears on Team Rocket's enemy rosters. In Pokémon GO, Weezing has an average maximum CP, useful in some leagues but rarely dominant. Its damage relies on its Poison moves, whose power can vary depending on the available sets.

Counters and weaknesses

Even with Levitate, Weezing remains vulnerable to the Psychic type, as well as Ground moves when its ability is not active in certain variants. Lightning, Ice, and Fire moves offer no particular advantage against it, but Psychic Pokémon or certain Ghost Pokémon with high Special Attack are effective counters. Its Galarian form, being Poison and Fairy, slightly shifts this picture by adding specific resistances and weaknesses.

Weezing and the Pokémon TCG

In the TCG, a Weezing Pokémon card often showcases its ability to deal passive damage through smog or pollution. Some rare cards emphasize its toxic power or terrain effects. Prices vary by set, but Weezing remains a sought-after card for decks focused on Poison and residual damage.
