Detailed information
General Overview of Poliwag
In the Pokémon games, Poliwag is known in English as Poliwag and in Japan as ニョロモ – Nyoromo, two names that perfectly echo its appearance as a small aquatic tadpole. This Water-type Pokémon is easily recognizable thanks to the spiral on its belly, a pattern that reveals its internal organs through its thin skin. This skin is also very elastic and even the sharpest fangs bounce off it, which is an important piece of trivia for players.
Key Pokédex Information
Poliwag belongs to the first generations and remains an appreciated Pokémon in many games for its simplicity of use early in the adventure. Its Pokédex number varies by region, but its description remains broadly the same: a blue tadpole with a visible spiral, small legs, and surprising speed thanks to its slender body. Its size and weight (expressed in meters and kg depending on the game) make it a lightweight Pokémon, well suited for crossing aquatic areas quietly.
Stats and Characteristics
Poliwag's stats are centered around Speed, one of its main strengths, which lets it attack first in most low-level battles. Its HP and Defense remain modest, however, requiring careful management during the early phases of progression. Its base stat total is balanced for a Pokémon from around level 5 to level 25, before evolution.
As for resistances, its Water type gives it an advantage against Fire, Ice, and Steel, but it remains vulnerable to the Grass and Electric types. For training, players can optimize its EVs in Speed and Special Attack if they are aiming for an offensive evolution.
Useful Moves and Attacks
Poliwag can learn several Water moves like Bubble Beam, Water Gun, or Rain Dance, which reinforce its aquatic power. Some games also allow learning TMs such as Body Slam, Ice Beam, or even Hydro Pump once evolved. Although it has small attacks at the beginning, its progression with levels offers more strategic moves, useful in battle or in raids in Pokémon GO.
Its physical attacks remain limited in damage due to its low Attack stat, but it compensates with good Speed and status moves that can hinder the enemy. Its maximum CP or max CP depends on the generation and game (Pokémon GO, console, etc.).
Evolution and Breeding
In terms of evolution, Poliwag becomes Poliwhirl and then Poliwrath via the use of a Water Stone, or can evolve into Politoed via a trade holding a specific item depending on the version. Its breeding is done via a Water-type egg, and its abilities vary by generation, including notably Swift Swim or Damp.
Catch Rate and Location
Poliwag's catch rate is generally high, making it simple to integrate into a team at the start of the game. It is found in many aquatic areas: ponds, lakes, rivers, and sometimes on certain islands depending on the game (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, etc.). In Pokémon GO, it appears regularly during events or in rainy weather.
Tips for Players and Collectible Cards
For players, Poliwag is ideal for quickly building a reliable Water Pokémon before its first evolution. Its Speed and ease of training allow for a pleasant learning curve. As for Pokémon cards, Poliwag appears in several sets, often as common cards but appreciated for their illustrations highlighting its spiral and translucent belly. Japanese versions are sought after for their original name Nyoromo and the variations in artwork.
