Overview of Omastar
Omastar is a fossil Pokémon highly appreciated by players, known in Japanese as オムスター. It is the direct evolution of Omanyte, generally obtained around level 40 when a Helix Fossil is brought back to life. This ancient species combines Water and Rock typing, which strongly influences its uses in battle, its resistances, and its weaknesses. Its spiral shell is a reminder of its prehistoric form and provides solid base Defense, making it a sturdy Pokémon on many strategy-oriented teams.
In the main games, Omastar appears as a rare Pokémon, obtained by reviving a fossil in regions such as Kanto, Johto, or Kalos depending on the version. Its Speed remains fairly low, but its offensive power and defensive stats allow it to hit hard while absorbing many hits. Players often choose it for special wall or physical wall strategies thanks to its high Defense values.
Type, information, and base stats
Omastar is Water and Rock type. This dual typing gives it interesting effectiveness against Fire, Ice, and Flying Pokémon, but it becomes vulnerable to Grass, Ground, and Fighting attacks. Its stats are concentrated primarily on Defense and Special Attack, making it ideal for launching powerful attacks while benefiting from its high physical resistance.
Its Speed stat is low, but its ability to absorb several attacks often allows it to hold on for at least one turn, even against very offensive opponents. Players can optimize its EVs to increase its Defense or Special Attack depending on the chosen nature.
Moves, abilities, and evolution
Omastar learns a wide range of moves related to Water, Rock, and sometimes Ice. Among the most commonly used moves are Hydro Pump, Water Pulse, Surf, as well as Rock moves such as Rock Throw or Avalanche. In certain games, it can also learn moves via TM or HM, which improves its strategic role.
The evolution from Omanyte occurs at a fixed level depending on the version, often around level 40, making this evolution essential to benefit from a complete offensive set. Additionally, players monitor its ability, which can greatly affect its performance in battle, notably by boosting certain moves or increasing its resistance.
Competitive use and recommended nature
Omastar is generally used as a special attacker or as a defensive wall depending on the team composition. Thanks to its high Defense values, it can absorb several physical attacks, making it an excellent pivot in difficult battles. Its base HP is adequate, which allows for a balanced set.
To optimize its performance, the favored natures are Modest to strengthen Special Attack or Bold to increase Defense. Players then choose to distribute EVs to accentuate either its resistance or its power. Although it is slow, it benefits from access to many moves to adapt to multiple situations.
Omastar in the games and appearances
Omastar can be found in many games in the series, including Red, Blue, Yellow, Diamond, Pearl, Sapphire, Ruby, and various recent versions where fossils can be restored. Its unique design, inspired by a prehistoric marine creature, has left its mark on multiple generations of players.
Its massive shell, spiral appearance, and tentacles make it a Pokémon easily recognizable in the Pokédex. This Pokémon remains popular for its strategic role, its connection to Omanyte, and its many references in fossil-themed Pokémon cards.
Trading cards and collection
Omastar trading cards are regularly found in sets centered on fossil Pokémon or on the Kanto region. These cards highlight its high power and prehistoric theme, with Water or Rock attacks depending on the edition. Certain old and ultra-rare sets feature Omastar with good collector value, especially holographic versions.
Players and collectors often appreciate cards depicting its spiral shell or its Rock attacks. Its price varies depending on condition, edition, and available copies.
