Detailed information

Overview of Kabuto

Kabuto is a first-generation fossil Pokémon. Its Japanese name is カブト. This small Rock and Water Pokémon is recognizable by its rigid helmet-shaped shell and its large red eyes that glow in the dark. Inspired by a prehistoric arthropod, Kabuto once lived on beaches and in shallow seas before disappearing for a long time.

In the Pokédex, Kabuto is described as an ancient Pokémon revived from a Dome Fossil. Its body is protected by a hard shell, while its softer underside allows it to move through sand or mud. Its height is approximately 0.5 m and its weight is around 11.5 kg, making it a compact yet sturdy Pokémon. Its eyes allow it to see in the darkness of the ocean floor.

Statistics and base characteristics

Base stats and strategic potential

Kabuto's base stats are oriented toward Defense and physical Attack. It has good Defense thanks to its shell, solid Attack, but rather limited Speed. Its HP remains moderate, meaning it must be played carefully in battle. Its power increases significantly after evolving into Kabutops.

  • Type: Rock and Water

  • Ability: Swift Swim or Battle Armor depending on the version

  • Dominant stat: Defense

  • Notable weakness: Grass as a double weakness

Its dual typing gives it an interesting role on certain teams, particularly against Fire, Ice, and Flying Pokémon. On the other hand, it is very susceptible to powerful Grass and Ground attacks.

Nature, IVs, and optimization

To maximize its effectiveness, a nature boosting Attack or Defense is recommended. Strategic players monitor IV and EV values to optimize its physical moves. Even if Kabuto is rarely used at the highest competitive level, it can surprise in the early game or in specific formats.

Moves and abilities in battle

Level-up moves

Kabuto learns moves such as Sand Attack, Water Gun, Ancient Power, and Metal Claw. Ancient Power can sometimes raise all its stats, which can change the course of a battle. Thanks to its Water typing, it can deal effective damage against Fire and Ground Pokémon.

Its physical Attack combined with Rock moves such as Stone Edge after evolution gives it real offensive power. However, at its base level, it remains a transitional Pokémon before evolution.

Evolution and obtaining

How to obtain Kabuto

Kabuto is generally obtained by restoring the Dome Fossil in games such as Pokémon Red, Blue, Diamond, or Pearl. The player must choose between two fossils, which influences their team for a large portion of the adventure.

It evolves at level 40 into Kabutops, gaining Speed, Attack, and overall effectiveness. This evolution completely transforms its strategic place on the team.

Kabuto in the Pokémon Trading Card Game

Kabuto cards and collecting

The Kabuto card exists in several Pokémon TCG sets. It is often found as a Basic Pokémon obtained from a fossil, with an effect requiring the player to play a Fossil card before placing it in the game. Certain versions highlight its shell as a damage-reduction mechanic.

Collectors appreciate older Kabuto cards for their retro design and detailed artwork showing its distinctive helmet. Depending on condition, rarity, and set, the card can vary in value. Older editions in good condition are particularly attractive to first-generation fans.

Kabuto thus remains an iconic fossil Pokémon, appreciated for its unique design, its prehistoric form, and its evolving strategic role throughout the game.
