General overview of Moltres
Moltres, known in English as Moltres and in Japanese as ファイヤー, is one of the three Legendary Birds of Kanto alongside Articuno and Zapdos. This Moltres is Fire and Flying type in its classic form, and there is also an alternative Galarian form of the Dark and Flying types, widely used in certain competitive games. For players, Moltres remains a pillar of Legendary Pokémon, often sought after for its flame-based offensive abilities and raw power.
Moltres weighs approximately 60 kg for a size close to 2 m. Its appearance dominated by red, orange and flames gives it an immediately recognizable silhouette. In the games, it generally appears very late in the progression, making it a notable challenge in each generation. It is genderless like most Legendary Pokémon and has no evolutions, although its Galarian form provides a welcomed variation.
Characteristics in the games
Type, role and usage
The classic version of Moltres (Fire and Flying) has access to the moves Ember, Fire Spin, Flamethrower, Fire Blast as well as Flying options such as Wing Attack. This gives it a role focused on Special Attack. Its Galarian form, in contrast, plays more around the Fighting and Dark types, using moves such as Fiery Wrath and Nasty Plot in certain recent titles. Competitive players particularly appreciate its decent bulk and its ability to apply constant pressure.
Location and catching
Depending on the generation, Moltres can be found on Mt. Ember, Victory Road or during special events. In modern remakes, it sometimes roams the map, forcing the player to pursue it. Its catch rate remains low, and it is advisable to use moves that do not inflict a KO while also applying status conditions. In certain games, its Galarian form appears during raids or as a roaming Pokémon.
Moltres and the Pokémon TCG
The best-known Moltres Pokémon cards
In the Pokémon TCG, Moltres has appeared in many editions, notably Fossil, Destiny, Shining Fates, and various special products. The Moltres EX cards and the Team Rocket Moltres EX cards are among the most sought-after illustrations, particularly among collectors. Certain ultra or promo versions feature spectacular visuals centered on flames and the Legendary Pokémon's iconic style.
Dedicated bundles can also be found, such as the Moltres EX Team collection box, or premium products sometimes containing up to 18 boosters, a playmat, markers and dice. Japanese and English illustrations sometimes differ, which pushes collectors to seek out both versions to complete their set. In modern versions, the Galarian Moltres V card made a strong impression on players with its dark red design and aggressive style.
Power, HP and deck usage
Moltres Pokémon cards often stand out for attacks based on fire or special effects that impose additional damage when it enters play. EX versions generally have a high HP total and high-power attacks, making them a cornerstone for Fire or Dark decks depending on the variant. In certain formats, Galarian Moltres is notably used to apply immediate pressure in battle thanks to its entry ability.
