General overview of Dratini

Dratini, known in English as Dratini and in Japanese as ドラティニ, is a Dragon-type Pokémon highly appreciated by players for its final evolution Dragonite and for its offensive abilities based on the Dragon type. Its appearance as a small blue serpent quickly catches the attention of Trainers, especially in games where catching it can require patience and strategy. Dratini is a Pokémon often tied to legends, and its Pokédex number reflects its status as a rare and sought-after creature.

By default, Dratini has balanced stats, with a moderate emphasis on Speed and good Attack potential as it levels up. Its light weight, measured in only a few kg, and its relatively small size make it a discreet Pokémon in the wild. It is often encountered in water-related areas, notably through fishing or special methods such as the Super Rod in certain versions. In several games, obtaining Dratini may also require luck at a game corner or in a specific area such as a cave or an isolated mountain.

Type, characteristics and useful information

Dratini is exclusively Dragon type. This gives it natural resistances against Fire-, Water-, Grass- and Electric-type moves, but makes it vulnerable to Ice, a very dangerous element for this small Pokémon. Its Pokédex entry mentions several times its aptitude for shedding thanks to its Shed Skin ability, which allows it to rid itself of certain status conditions.

Its base values remain modest at first, requiring the Trainer to protect it carefully during the early turns of battle. However, with good EV training oriented toward Attack and Speed, Dratini quickly becomes an important piece in a team. It also has interesting moves such as Wrap, Water Pulse, Aqua Tail and Dragon-type moves at higher levels.

Dratini's evolution

Dratini evolves into Dragonair and then into Dragonite, one of the most iconic Dragon Pokémon. This progressive evolution transforms a small discreet blue Pokémon into a powerful fighter capable of learning very high-power moves such as Outrage, Surf, Waterfall or even Thunder via HM or TM depending on the generation. The change from Dratini to Dragonair already provides a solid gain in Speed, Defense and Attack, making it an excellent choice for the mid-game.

Strategic information

In competitive play, Dratini is not intended to battle extensively in its base form. It primarily serves to build toward Dragonite, but some players use it in specific formats or challenges where evolved Pokémon are not permitted. Thanks to its Shed Skin ability, it can absorb a status change and shed it the following turn. In regional leagues or special challenges in the Legend games, its survival depends heavily on anticipating Ice- or Steel-type moves.

Dratini in the games and appearances

Dratini has appeared since the first generation and remains present in almost every main-series game. It is often difficult to catch, with a fairly low catch rate that sometimes requires multiple attempts. Methods such as fishing, the Super Rod, breeding or encounters in rare areas are part of its appeal for collectors.

In certain games, Dratini can learn moves through breeding such as Dragon Dance or other abilities enhancing its offensive potential. Its presence in Pokémon GO has also made an impression on players, notably thanks to Dragonite, which dominates multiple raids and Gym battles.

Pokémon cards and collection

Dratini cards are often sought after to complete Dratini, Dragonair and Dragonite sets. They exist in different illustration styles depending on the generation and edition. Although it is not an ultra-rare card in most series, Dratini remains essential for collectors wishing to complete the Dragon evolution lines. Certain cards highlight its slender form, expressive eyes and peaceful nature.

Whether for strategy, collecting or simply the pleasure of completing a Pokédex, Dratini remains an important choice for all Dragon Pokémon fans.
