Detailed information
General overview of Zapdos
Zapdos is a Legendary Pokémon of the Flying and Electric types, known in English as Zapdos and in Japanese as サンダー. It is part of the Kanto Legendary Bird trio and has appeared since the first generation in the Pokédex. Its classic form stands approximately 1.6 m tall and weighs around 52.6 kg, with brilliant yellow plumage and spiky wings evoking lightning bolts piercing the clouds. In the games, Zapdos is genderless and has no evolution. Its regional form in Galar, often called Galarian Zapdos, changes its style entirely and adopts the Fighting and Flying types, which completely modifies its strategic role.
Important information for players
Zapdos stands out as one of the best Pokémon for absorbing special hits thanks to solid Special Defense and a very well-balanced base stat spread. It benefits from the Pressure ability in most games, useful for depleting the PP of opponents in long battles. With its dual Electric and Flying typing, it resists many moves while threatening a wide range of enemies with its Electric moves such as Thunderbolt or Charge Beam. Its Galarian form is oriented toward physical combat and offers an interesting alternative based on Speed and critical hits.
Moves, abilities and level
Zapdos naturally learns major moves such as Thunder Shock, Thunderbolt, Drill Peck or Rain Dance depending on the generation. It can also use Light Screen to support a team, or Thunder Wave to slow down an opponent. Its versatility allows it to be played either as a special attacker or as a bulky support. In many recent games, it gains access to a wide range of TMs and HMs, offering offensive power adaptable to your strategy.
Strategic role and EVs
In competitive play, Zapdos is very often used as a defensive pivot thanks to Roost, which lets it recover its HP and thereby extend its presence on the field. The most commonly played EV spreads focus on Defense or Special Defense depending on the team's needs. It can counter Water-, Flying- or Steel-type Pokémon by varying its moves and can fit into a rain composition thanks to Rain Dance, which boosts the accuracy of certain Electric moves.
Catching, availability and forms
In most main-series games, Zapdos appears only once, requiring a careful catch. Its low catch rate demands the use of status conditions such as paralysis or sand to whittle down its HP without knocking it out. In Kanto, it is often found in the Power Plant, while its Galarian form can be spotted in the vast windy plains. Its Pokédex entry highlights its ability to create lightning bolts of phenomenal power and its capacity to trigger thunderstorms simply by flapping its wings.
Pokémon cards and merchandise
Zapdos cards regularly appear in numerous expansions, notably across various generation sets, Ruby, Sun or GO. Rare versions often feature illustrations highlighting its aura as a Legendary Bird surrounded by electricity. Cards that can fetch high prices are those with EX, GX or special full-art variants. For collectors, cards from the Legendary Trio (Zapdos, Moltres, Articuno) are particularly sought after, especially when they come from an older block.
