General overview of Mewtwo
Mewtwo, known in English as Mewtwo and in Japanese as ミュウツー, is a Psychic-type Pokémon artificially created in a laboratory from Mew's DNA. For players, Mewtwo represents one of the most powerful Pokémon ever to appear in the games, thanks to its extremely high offensive stats, especially in Special Attack and Speed. In the Pokédex, it is generally presented as a perfected clone with a single purpose: to become the ultimate Psychic weapon.
Its pure Psychic type gives it access to very powerful moves such as Psychic, Confusion, Calm Mind and Psystrike, which explains why Mewtwo often dominates in high-level competitive battles. It appears in several versions of the game, notably in Generation 1, but also in remakes and more recent titles.
Stats and useful in-game information
Mewtwo is renowned for its very high base stats: a colossal Special Attack, exceptional Speed, and decent HP that allow it to endure several hits in the most demanding battles. Its weight is around 122 kg for a height of 2 m, giving it an imposing visual presence in arenas and raids.
In the main games, Mewtwo often appears late, sometimes behind secret areas, requiring the player to use a Master Ball or a status strategy to successfully catch it. It has no evolution, but it has two Mega forms: Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, accessible through Mewtwonite X or Y. These forms alter its strategic approach:
Mega Mewtwo X: a form oriented toward physical Attack, offering impressive raw power.
Mega Mewtwo Y: a form specialized in Special Attack, extremely fast and devastating.
These Mega Evolutions are often considered among the most powerful ever created, surpassing the usual standards of competitive play.
Abilities, moves and strategic role
Thanks to its Psychic type and access to a vast move set, Mewtwo can adapt to many playstyles. It can play as a pure attacker, a support with Calm Mind or Defog, or even a wallbreaker with Psystrike. Whether in solo play or in competitive battles, it remains a premier Pokémon in any team looking to maximize power.
Its Special Attack is its best stat, but its Speed also allows it to outpace the majority of opponents. In terms of Defense and Special Defense, it has decent values, but remains most effective when it strikes quickly to prevent any retaliation.
Mewtwo in the Pokémon TCG
Mewtwo is extremely popular in the Pokémon card game, with many illustrations available in various sets. Classic, EX, GX, V, VSTAR and even special cards from collector boxes or limited series can all be found. For collectors, certain Mewtwo cards from first editions or those tied to specific events are highly sought after.
The cards often highlight its Psychic type, its powerful abilities and its iconic role in the Pokémon universe. Recent editions sometimes offer alternative forms or series inspired by the Pokémon Legends games, reinforcing its status as a mythical Pokémon.
Appearances, forms and additional information
Mewtwo appears in several video games, films and side missions. It is sometimes offered as a Mystery Gift during special events, notably in December in certain versions. Its role in the story varies, but it is almost always presented as a powerful, unstable being difficult to control due to its genetic origin.
In modern games, Mewtwo always holds a central role thanks to its imposing design, unmatched power and its ability to represent the pinnacle of Pokémon genetics. Players often seek its Mega forms, special versions and signature moves to complete their teams and collections.
