General overview of Dragonite

Dragonite, known in English as Dragonite and in Japanese as カイリュー, is one of the most appreciated Pokémon by Trainers for its power, versatility and key role in many Pokémon video games. It is the final evolution of Dratini and then Dragonair, appearing as early as the first generation. Its Dragon and Flying typing gives it access to varied and often devastating moves, making it an excellent choice both in the adventure and in competitive battles.

With a massive yet surprisingly fast body, Dragonite regularly outpaces lighter Pokémon thanks to decent Speed for its size. Its imposing size and wings allow it to cross seas and assist humans in certain legends. Its reputation also rests on its raw strength: moves such as Draco Meteor, Fire Punch and Outrage give it very broad offensive coverage.

Dragonite's stats and type

Its Dragon and Flying typing grants it strong offensive assets, while also giving it some notable weaknesses, particularly against Ice. In terms of stats, Dragonite has high HP, exceptional Attack, as well as decent Defense and Special Defense. Its total base stat makes it one of the most complete Pokémon of its generation.

Its Pokédex number (No. 149) confirms its status as an iconic Kanto Pokémon. Thanks to well-distributed EVs, Dragonite can be optimized for many roles: physical sweeper, special tank or even support depending on the held item.

Important moves and abilities

Dragonite has a very wide move pool, allowing it to adapt to almost any team. Some key moves:

  • Draco Meteor for enormous special pressure.

  • Outrage or Dragon Dance for builds focused on Speed and physical damage.

  • Fire Punch, Thunder Punch or Earthquake to broaden coverage.

  • Roost to improve its endurance in battle.

Its abilities, such as Inner Focus or Multiscale, greatly influence its strategic use. Multiscale, notably, reduces damage taken when it is at full HP, allowing Dragonite to absorb even super-effective moves on the first turn.

Evolution and Pokédex information

Dragonite represents the culmination of the Dratini → Dragonair → Dragonite trio. The evolution requires a high level, but the reward is immense: a complete Dragon Pokémon capable of taking on multiple opponents in succession. In the main games, Dragonite often appears as a Pokémon used by prestigious Trainers, notably Champions.

In the Pokédex description, Dragonite is renowned for crossing seas and saving lost sailors. Despite its bulk, it shows remarkable intelligence and can understand human emotions. Its weight is around 210 kg and its height exceeds 2 meters, which matches well with its role as a protective Dragon.

Strategic use in the games

Thanks to its robust form, decent Speed and high Attack, Dragonite remains an excellent choice across many generations. It can fill varied roles depending on the chosen nature and held item: Choice Band to maximize damage or a weakness item to enjoy an extra boost. Its usage rate generally remains high in most competitive formats, as it can surprise with varied builds or provide support through its utility moves.

Dragonite Pokémon cards

On the card game side, Dragonite has many Dragonite cards, some of them highly sought after. Older series contain iconic Dragonite versions, and recent editions offer ultra-rare variants with spectacular artwork. Collectors particularly appreciate cards highlighting its massive wings or its characteristic meteor effect.

Each TCG generation brings new items and new visual forms, often centered on its power or its role as a legendary Dragon Pokémon in the hearts of players. Certain strategic decks have even been built around its Energy abilities and its longevity in play.
