Overview of Metang

Metang is a Psychic and Steel-type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. Its English name is Metang and its Japanese name is メタング. It evolves directly from Beldum and then can evolve into Metagross, making it a very important central step in its evolutionary line. Metang is often considered a strong Pokémon at mid-level thanks to its excellent defensive foundation and access to effective moves.

In the Pokédex, Metang is described as a metallic body composed of two perfectly synchronized brains. This peculiarity allows it to quickly calculate its actions in battle. Its massive appearance and high weight reflect its Steel type well, which strongly influences its resistance to common attacks encountered in the games.

Type and general characteristics

Metang has the dual Psychic and Steel typing, a combination highly sought after by players. This type grants it many natural resistances, notably against Normal, Flying, Psychic, Rock, and Grass attacks. On the other hand, it remains vulnerable to Fire, Ground, Ghost, and Dark attacks, which must be anticipated during battles.

Its size is relatively large for a middle-stage Pokémon and its high weight influences certain moves and damage calculations. Metang is not a fast Pokémon, but it compensates with solid Defense and balanced stats, ideal for absorbing hits while dealing consistent damage.

Base stats and EV potential

Metang's base stats place emphasis on Defense and Attack. Its HP are decent for its level, while its physical Attack allows it to effectively exploit Steel moves. Its Special Attack and Speed are more limited, clearly orienting its role toward a sturdy fighter rather than a fast sweeper.

In terms of EVs, Metang is often optimized with investment in Attack and Defense to maximize its presence on the field. This distribution allows its future evolution to be effectively prepared while remaining competitive during intermediate progression phases.

Main moves and useful abilities

Metang has a wide array of interesting moves for its type. Steel moves such as Metal Claw or Iron Head take full advantage of its physical Attack. On the Psychic side, Confusion and Psyshock provide good coverage against opponents that are frailer on the special side.

It can also learn support or coverage moves via HM and TM, making it adaptable across game versions. Certain moves allow it to boost its power or surprise in battle, notably against Rock or Fighting types.

Evolution and progression conditions

Metang is the direct evolution of Beldum and then evolves into Metagross at a high level. This evolution requires patience, but the gain in power is considerable. The passage through Metang is therefore a key step for players wishing to obtain a strong Metagross.

During this phase, Metang appears in certain specific areas depending on the version, often with a relatively low catch rate. It is therefore sometimes simpler to evolve Beldum rather than attempting a direct capture.

In-game use and interest for cards

In-game, Metang is appreciated for its reliability and resilience. It finds its place both in the main adventure and in certain strategic battles, particularly thanks to its very defensive Steel type. When used well, it can hold its own against faster opponents and set up tactical switches.

In the trading card game, Metang often benefits from an appreciated design and cards focused on Defense or Psychic and Steel energy. These cards are interesting for completing evolution-based decks centered around Metagross or for collectors looking for a coherent full line.
