Detailed information

General overview of Magmortar

Magmortar is a Fire type Pokémon belonging to the third stage of the evolutionary family of Magby and Magmar. Known in Japanese as ブーバーン, it is depicted in the Pokédex as a creature that specializes in ranged attacks through its cannon-like arms. For players, Magmortar is primarily sought out for its raw Fire power, access to explosive attacks, and effectiveness in high-level battles — especially when fully EV-trained and at maximum level.

Available in most modern games and also present in Pokémon GO, Magmortar benefits from an offensive movepool ideal for dealing sustained damage. A Shiny form exists, featuring a more red and white coloration. It remains a Pokémon oriented purely toward offense, with a robust body but Defense lower than other, more defensively inclined Fire types.

Type, information, and evolution

Magmortar is a Fire type Pokémon, which naturally gives it strong offensive power against Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel type Pokémon. It remains susceptible to Water, Rock, and Ground types, opponents frequently encountered in both PvE and PvP battles.

Magmortar evolves from Magmar when traded while holding the Magmarizer, or via equivalent mechanics depending on the game version. Its Pokédex number falls right after Magmar, completing the evolutionary line of the baby Pokémon Magby. For breeding, Magmortar does not lay Magmortar Eggs directly — rather, a Magby hatches from a compatible pair.

Stats and base values

Its base values are oriented toward Special Attack and a strong ability to deal fast damage. Magmortar generally has a solid overall stat total for a Fire sweeper. Its HP is adequate, but the Pokémon remains fragile on the physical Defense side, requiring good anticipation of Ground or Rock type hits.

For players targeting levels 20, 25, or 40 in Pokémon GO, its max CP scales with level and IV. At level 50, Magmortar reaches its maximum potential, allowing it to optimize its DPS in raids against bosses weak to Fire.

Moves and recommended set

Magmortar distinguishes itself through its projectile-based Fire attacks. Among the essential moves:

  • Flamethrower for a stable and reliable attack.

  • Fire Blast to maximize damage in a single turn.

  • Fire Punch to diversify the set and leverage its cannon-shaped arms.

  • Flame charge or equivalent depending on the generation.

Strategically, players often run a special set with high Special Attack, using a Modest or Timid nature depending on needs. The Pokémon excels in fast-paced battles where it can seize the advantage without taking too many direct hits.

Form, appearance, and Pokédex details

Magmortar has a large red and yellow body with arms resembling two cannons capable of launching concentrated fireballs. In some Pokédex entries, it is said to raise its internal temperature to project a flaming shot from its hands. Its size and weight vary by version, but it remains one of the most imposing Fire Pokémon of its generation.

Males and females show minor differences, often related to the shape of their arms or details on the body's flames, though these remain barely visible in-game. A Shiny form exists and alters the coloration — appreciated by collectors during captures.

Usefulness in battles and raids

Magmortar is a Pokémon built for offensive combat. It performs effectively in Pokémon GO raids against Steel or Ice type bosses. In the main series games, it integrates well into a team seeking a Fire sweeper capable of applying immediate pressure.

Its catch rates and availability vary by version, but players often access its final form directly via trade or optimized breeding. With EV training focused on Special Attack and Speed, Magmortar can become a genuine threat in battle.
