General overview of Lairon

Lairon, known by its Japanese name コドラ, is a Steel- and Rock-type Pokémon from the Hoenn region. It holds a central place in the Aron evolution line, representing the intermediate form before Aggron. Lairon stands out for its body completely covered in extremely resilient metallic armor, naturally forged through the absorption of iron and minerals present in its environment. In the Pokédex, Lairon is often described as a Pokémon living in mountains, caves, or near railway tracks, drawn to metal.

For players, Lairon is a solid defensive Pokémon, valued for its ability to absorb heavy physical damage. Its Steel type grants it many resistances, making it interesting in several battle contexts, particularly during the main story and in raids depending on the version. Its considerable weight and imposing size also influence certain moves like Heavy Slam, which is highly effective with this Pokémon.

Base stats and battle profile

Lairon's statistics are geared toward Defense and physical Attack. Its HP is decent without being exceptional, but its high Defense allows it to hold out for a long time against many opponents. Its base Attack is sufficient to deal consistent damage, especially when combined with Rock- or Steel-type moves. On the other hand, its Speed is low, which often calls for a more measured and strategic playstyle.

In terms of EVs, Lairon is generally optimized with investments in Defense and HP in order to maximize its role as a physical wall. This distribution makes it particularly effective against Pokémon oriented toward Normal or Rock attacks. However, one must remain cautious against Ground-, Fighting-, and Water-type attacks, which represent genuine natural counters.

Typing, resistances, and weaknesses

Lairon's dual Steel and Rock typing gives it many resistances, notably against Normal-, Flying-, Bug-, and Rock-type attacks. This makes it an excellent choice for absorbing repeated hits during prolonged battles. Its steel body acts as true armor, greatly reducing incoming damage.

In return, this combined typing brings several significant weaknesses. Ground-, Fighting-, and Water-type attacks deal heavy damage to Lairon. These weaknesses must be anticipated during team building by pairing Lairon with Pokémon capable of covering these threats.

Main moves and abilities

Lairon has a wide range of physical moves suited to its profile. Among its Steel-type moves, Iron Head and Metal Claw are ideal for exploiting its base Attack. On the Rock side, Rock Slide and Rock Tomb are highly valued for their power and utility in battle.

It can also learn moves such as Heavy Slam, which directly benefits from its high weight to deal significant damage. Certain TMs allow it to broaden its offensive coverage, even though Lairon remains primarily a Pokémon geared toward immediate attacks and close-range combat.

Evolution and in-game usage

Lairon evolves from Aron and then evolves itself into Aggron at a higher level. This evolution marks a true leap in stats, particularly in HP and Attack. Many players nonetheless choose to keep Lairon temporarily to take advantage of its excellent Defense-to-damage ratio at an intermediate level.

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Black, and White, Lairon is a reliable choice for progressing through the adventure. In collecting, its cards often highlight its massive and metallic appearance, greatly appreciated by collectors. Whether for battle, evolution, or completing the Pokédex, Lairon remains an iconic Steel-type Pokémon from Hoenn.
