Detailed information

General overview of Hoppip

Hoppip is a Grass and Flying-type Pokémon introduced in the Johto region. Its English name is Hoppip and its Japanese name is ハネッコ. It is known for its form inspired by a dandelion carried on the wind and for its role as the base of an evolutionary line widely used in defensive and support strategies.

In the Pokédex, Hoppip is described as an extremely light Pokémon that lets itself be carried by the wind above fields and plains. This characteristic directly influences its Speed and its combat style, which is more focused on evasion, status moves, and hindering the opponent rather than on raw power.

Type and battle weaknesses

Hoppip has the dual Grass and Flying type. This combination gives it a total immunity to Ground-type moves, which is very useful at low levels. On the other hand, it has several important weaknesses, notably against Ice, Fire, Poison, and Flying-type moves.

In battle, Hoppip is rarely used to deal direct damage. It primarily serves to slow down the opponent, set up support moves, or prepare a switch to a more powerful Pokémon.

Base stats and IV potential

Hoppip's base stats are low, making it a fragile Pokémon. Its HP is low, its Defense and Special Defense remain limited, and its Attack is very weak. On the other hand, its Speed is decent for a base Pokémon, which sometimes allows it to strike first.

For players attentive to IVs, Hoppip can be interesting to optimize in Speed and HP to maximize its usefulness early in the game or in specific formats. Its Special Attack stat being very low, it is generally not a priority.

Available moves and abilities

Hoppip primarily learns Grass and Flying-type moves. Among its most notable abilities, you will find Tackle, Worry Seed, Sleep Powder, Leech Seed, and sometimes Bullet Seed depending on the generation. These moves allow it to hinder the opponent over several turns.

Thanks to TMs and HMs, it can also learn utility moves related to wind or field control. Its move set is therefore oriented toward support and battle-pace management rather than power.

Evolution and level progression

Hoppip evolves into Skiploom starting at level 18, then into Jumpluff at level 27. This evolution noticeably improves its Speed, Defense, and support capabilities. Hoppip is therefore primarily a starting point in a well-known strategic evolutionary line.

For players wishing to complete the Pokédex or prepare a long-term competitive Pokémon, it is recommended to evolve Hoppip quickly, as its effectiveness remains limited at low levels.

Capture and practical information

Hoppip is generally easy to catch. Its catch rate is high and it appears often in grassy routes, open fields, and windy areas, particularly in the morning or during the day. Its small size and calm or cautious nature fit well with its defensive role.

In recent games and in Pokémon GO, Hoppip is often present during events related to the Grass type or to sunshine. It is also appreciated by card collectors for its iconic design and its illustrations featuring leaves and wind.
