Detailed information

General overview of Greninja

Greninja is a Water and Dark type Pokémon, known in Japanese as ゲッコウガ. It represents the final evolution of the Froakie and Frogadier line. Hugely popular among players, Greninja is renowned for its high Speed, its great offensive power, and its combat style based on evasion and rapid strikes. Introduced in the sixth generation, this Pokémon quickly became a major strategic choice across many games.

In the Pokédex, Greninja is described as a frog Pokémon capable of moving silently and striking multiple times before an opponent can react. Its unique design, featuring a tongue shaped like a scarf, greatly contributes to its status as a rare and iconic Pokémon.

Type, stats, and battle potential

The Water type combined with the Dark type gives Greninja highly interesting offensive coverage. It resists several common types well and can catch many opponents off guard thanks to its access to a wide variety of attacks. Its Speed stat is particularly high, allowing it to strike first in the vast majority of battles.

Among its base stats, Greninja stands out for its very high Special Attack and Speed. Its Defense is more fragile, which demands an aggressive and strategic playstyle. When used well, it can knock out an opponent in a single blow thanks to its power combined with its swiftness.

Abilities and available forms

Greninja's standard ability allows it to boost the power of certain attacks depending on the situation. However, its most well-known form remains the special form inspired by its bond with its trainer, often referred to as its powered-up form in the games that feature it. This form further increases its Speed and strength, making Greninja extremely dangerous in battle.

This form is only available in certain versions and under specific conditions, which makes it rare and highly sought after by competitive players.

Signature attacks and strategy

Greninja's attacks are at the heart of its effectiveness. It has a wide selection of Water, Dark, Ice, and Bug type moves, allowing it to adapt to many situations. Its signature attack, often associated with rapid water projectiles, benefits fully from its high Speed stat.

  • Fast and powerful Water attacks to exploit its primary type

  • Dark moves ideal against Psychic and Ghost types

  • Ice attacks useful for countering Grass and Dragon types

Strategically, Greninja is often used as a fast attacker. It is advisable to maximize its Speed and power in order to take advantage of its natural edge. Its effectiveness rests on its ability to hit hard before taking damage.

Presence in games and trading cards

Greninja is available in several main-series games, with acquisition methods sometimes tied to events or specific evolutions. In certain recent games, it may not be obtainable in the wild, which further increases its rarity.

On the trading card side, Greninja is highly prized. Its cards often feature effects related to Speed or multiple hits, faithfully reflecting its combat style in the games. Certain rare and Shiny cards reach high values, especially those depicting its most powerful form.

Thanks to its design, high performance, and enduring popularity, Greninja remains an essential Pokémon for both strategic battles and collectors.
