General overview of Mega Greninja

This form was officially revealed during a Nintendo Direct on September 12, 2025, alongside several other Mega forms. Mega Greninja is notably associated with the game Legends: Z-A where it has a specific Pokédex description. In this context, it becomes an even more impressive version of the amphibian Pokémon well known to trainers.

Physique and appearance

The Mega Evolution dramatically changes Greninja's appearance. The energy released during the transformation creates a giant spinning Water Shuriken. Mega Greninja clings to this circular weapon, remaining suspended upside down. This unusual posture allows it to surprise opponents during battle.

The body of Mega Greninja becomes predominantly black. The extremities of its limbs retain a dark blue hue. On its calves, small light blue shurikens appear, echoing the main weapon it uses in battle. Two long light blue crests replace the single crest found on standard Greninja, giving this Mega form an even more dynamic and aggressive silhouette.

There is no visible difference between male and female individuals of this form. All share the same appearance and the same physical characteristics.

Shiny form

The shiny version of Mega Greninja broadly retains the colors of shiny Greninja. The areas that are normally dark blue become dark grey. The chest and lower jaw take on a grey color while the tongue remains red. This variant is particularly sought after by collectors and players who want to complete their Pokédex with rare forms.

Evolution and obtaining

Mega Greninja is obtained through a specific Mega Evolution. To reach this form, a trainer must have Greninja equipped with the Greninjaite. This special stone triggers the transformation during battle and allows the Pokémon to access its Mega form.

The full evolutionary line begins with Froakie. This Pokémon then evolves into Frogadier starting at level 16. Once level 36 is reached, Frogadier evolves into Greninja. The latter can then access Mega Greninja through the Greninjaite.

This temporary evolution improves its stats and boosts its effectiveness during strategic battles.

Ability and moves

Mega Greninja has the ability Protean. This ability is extremely powerful in battle as it changes the Pokémon's type to match exactly the move being used. Each attack therefore changes its type, which allows it to gain a power bonus and surprise opponents.
