Detailed information

Overview of Bagon

Bagon is a Dragon-type Pokémon introduced in the Hoenn generation. Its French name is Draby and its Japanese name is タツベイ. This small Pokémon is known for its stubborn character and its obsessive dream of flying, which explains its direct connection to its final evolution Salamence. Bagon appears in the Pokédex as a Pokémon living in rocky, steep areas, often at the foot of sheer cliffs. Despite its small size, it possesses great latent power and remarkable determination.

Bagon is a Pokémon highly sought after by players due to its evolution potential. It evolves at level 30 into Shelgon, then at level 50 into Salamence, an extremely powerful Dragon-type Pokémon in battle. This late evolution makes Bagon interesting for EV optimization and long-term team planning in competitive play.

Base stats and characteristics

Bagon's base stats reflect its status as a Pokémon in the making. Its HP are decent for a Dragon-type starter, while its Attack and Defense remain modest. Its Speed is quite low, making it vulnerable early in battle. On the other hand, its Special Attack stat already allows it to exploit certain Fire or Dragon moves such as Ember.

  • Primary type: Dragon

  • Size: small compared to its evolutions

  • Pokédex number: #371

  • Category: Rock Head Pokémon

The EVs earned by defeating Bagon are oriented toward Attack, which reinforces its interest for players looking to maximize the raw power of Salamence in the long run.

Moves and abilities

Bagon has a limited but effective move set for its level. It primarily learns physical moves and a few special attacks. Dragon-type moves quickly become central to its gameplay, though Fire coverage provides an interesting option against Steel and Ice types.

  • Ember as a basic Fire move

  • Bite for consistent damage output

  • Dragon Rage depending on the version

  • Double-Edge for high power at the cost of recoil

Through TMs, Bagon can learn a variety of moves that improve its versatility in battle. This makes it possible to prepare an effective set before it evolves, particularly for League battles or raids in certain versions.

Capture and encounter rate

Bagon's catch rate is relatively low, making it a Pokémon that is difficult to obtain without preparation. It is primarily encountered in the Hoenn region, often in specific areas such as certain mountain routes or rocky caves. Using Berries and a solid capture strategy is strongly recommended.

In certain versions such as Ruby, Sapphire, or Pearl, Bagon is considered a rare Pokémon. This rarity increases its value for collectors and players wishing to complete their Pokédex.

Bagon in competitive play and cards

Although Bagon is rarely used as-is in competitive battle, it remains essential in an optimized evolution strategy. Experienced players train it from the lowest level in order to precisely control its stat values and its moves. In the Trading Card Game, Bagon often appears as a basic Dragon card, with moderate power but strong symbolic ties to Salamence.

Its role is therefore primarily strategic, serving as a solid foundation for one of the most iconic and powerful Dragon-type Pokémon of its generation.
