Overview of Shelgon
Shelgon is a Dragon-type Pokémon introduced in the third generation. It is known by its English name Shelgon and its Japanese name コモルー. Shelgon holds a central place in its evolutionary line, serving as the direct middle stage between Bagon and Salamence. In the Pokédex, it is identified by its own number specific to the Hoenn region and stands out for its extremely tough bony shell.
This Dragon Pokémon is often sought by players for its durability in battle and its evolution potential. Shelgon evolves at level 50, making it a Pokémon that requires time and strategy to reach its final form. Its size is average for a dragon, but its weight is high due to its defensive shell.
Evolution and progression
Shelgon is the direct evolution of Bagon, which evolves at level 30. Once Shelgon is obtained, the player must train it to level 50 to trigger its evolution into Salamence. This late evolution explains why Shelgon is often used for a long time on a team before reaching its full potential.
This intermediate phase is important for EV and nature optimization. Many players choose to work on defensive stats or Attack depending on the final set planned for Salamence.
Stats and role in battle
Shelgon has defense-focused stats, which contrasts with its final evolution's offensive power orientation. Its shell allows it to absorb heavy damage, especially from physical attacks. On the other hand, its Speed remains limited, which affects its role in battle.
In strategic battles, Shelgon can serve as a temporary wall or defensive pivot. In Pokémon GO, its max CP remains moderate, but it is sometimes used to complete the Pokédex or to prepare a stronger Salamence.
Moves and available abilities
Shelgon's movepool is typical of Dragon Pokémon of its generation. It learns several moves by leveling up as well as via TM, allowing some flexibility depending on the game.
Dragon Claw for reliable Dragon-type damage
Crunch to cover Psychic and Ghost types
Flamethrower via TM to handle Steel types
Protect and Iron Defense to reinforce its defenses
These moves allow Shelgon to hold its ground in battle while setting the stage for its evolution. Charged moves are particularly useful in raids or extended battles.
Weaknesses and resistances
As a pure Dragon-type Pokémon, Shelgon has several natural resistances, notably against Fire, Water, Grass, and Electric types. On the other hand, it remains vulnerable to Ice, Dragon, and Fairy attacks depending on the generation.
These vulnerabilities must be taken into account when capturing and using it in battle, especially in recent games where the Fairy type is very prevalent.
Useful information for players and collectors
Shelgon is an appreciated Pokémon in the trading card game for its imposing design and its direct link to Salamence. Some cards highlight its high Defense or its role as a cocoon-like Pokémon.
In the main games, it is generally available in specific areas or by evolution, making wild encounters less frequent. Its catch rate is moderate, but training it requires patience. For players aiming for a competitive Salamence, Shelgon represents an essential and strategic stepping stone.
