Detailed information
Overview of Zorua
Zorua is a Dark-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation. Its English name is Zorua and its Japanese name is ゾロア. This Pokémon is known for its appearance as a cunning little fox and especially for its signature ability Illusion, which directly influences battles and player strategy.
Zorua is the pre-evolution of Zoroark, a much more powerful Pokémon oriented toward Special Attack. In the Pokédex, Zorua is often described as a wary Pokémon that takes on the appearance of a human child or other creatures to protect itself. This notion of illusion is central both to the gameplay and to its lore description.
Zorua is a small Pokémon, weighing approximately 12.5 kg, making it a light and discreet Pokémon. Its base stats are modest, which makes it better suited to early-game use or teams built around trickery and positioning.
Base stats and useful information
The base stats of Zorua reflect its fragile offensive role. Its strengths lie in Special Attack and Speed, while its Defense and HP remain low. This calls for careful use in battle, as Zorua can be knocked out quickly if poorly positioned.
Relatively low base HP
Good Special Attack for its level
Decent Speed allowing it to attack first
Low Defense and Special Defense
These stats make Zorua an effective Pokémon against unprepared opponents, but vulnerable to direct attacks. It is generally recommended to use it with a nature that boosts Speed or Special Attack.
Type, weaknesses, and resistances
Zorua is exclusively a Dark-type Pokémon. This type offers useful resistances against Psychic and Ghost attacks, making it a good counter to Pokémon that specialize in these types. However, Zorua is weak to Fighting, Bug, and Fairy attacks.
These weaknesses must be taken into account when building a team, as a bad switch can quickly put Zorua in a difficult position. In strategic battles, it is often used to surprise the opponent through its ability.
Illusion ability and battle impact
Zorua's main ability is Illusion. This ability allows Zorua to enter battle disguised as the last Pokémon in the party, until it takes damage. This mechanic is extremely powerful for deceiving the opponent and provoking poor decisions.
Thanks to Illusion, Zorua can force an unfavorable matchup on the enemy or draw an ineffective attack. This ability is also shared by its evolution Zoroark, making this evolutionary line very popular in competitive formats.
Learned moves and abilities
Zorua has a movepool oriented toward Dark and special attacks. It can learn moves such as Dark Pulse, Foul Play, or Shadow Claw depending on the generation and available TMs.
Dark moves to take advantage of STAB
Coverage moves to surprise opponents
Utility moves to disrupt the opponent
These moves allow Zorua to fit into a team built around mind games and psychological pressure.
Evolution and obtaining
Zorua evolves into Zoroark at a certain level, generally level 30 depending on the game. This evolution brings a massive gain in stats and turns Zorua into a serious offensive threat.
Zorua's catch rate is moderate and it is often obtained through events, specific encounters, or trades depending on the version. Its Hisuian form, a Normal and Ghost type, offers an interesting variant but is distinct from the standard Zorua.
In video games and collectible cards, Zorua remains very popular thanks to its design, its unique ability, and its direct connection to Zoroark, making it a Pokémon appreciated by both competitive players and collectors.
