General overview of Yamask

Yamask is a Pokémon of the Ghost type introduced in the fifth generation. Its English name is Yamask and its Japanese name is デスマス. This Pokémon is known for carrying an ancient mask, a central element of its identity and gameplay. Yamask is mainly used by players for its strategic evolution and its access to useful Ghost-type moves in the early and mid-game.

In the Pokédex, Yamask is described as the soul of a deceased human who preserves the memory of its past life through its mask. This lore dimension remains secondary for players, but it explains its shape, its relatively small size, and its defensive orientation. Its large ghostly form and passive behavior make it a unique Pokémon to catch in specific areas depending on the version.

Typing, form, and general information

Yamask is exclusively a Ghost type, which grants it important immunities against Normal- and Fighting-type moves. This trait makes it an interesting choice against certain trainers or during specific Gym battles. Its standard form is the Unovan one, distinct from its regional Galarian variant, which has a completely different evolution and set of mechanics.

Its size is modest, but its appearance gives a larger impression due to the mask it carries. Its weight remains low, though this has no direct impact on battles. Yamask has a single form in its Unovan version, which simplifies management for optimization-focused players.

Base stats and combat potential

Yamask's base stats lean toward Defense. Its HP is decent without being high, but its physical Defense is one of its strong points. On the other hand, its Speed and Attack remain low, limiting its effectiveness as a primary attacker. It is often used as a support Pokémon or as a necessary step before evolving.

At max level, Yamask cannot compete with fully evolved Pokémon, but it can endure several hits thanks to its defensive stats. Its value lies mainly in its ability to wear down opponents through shadow moves and status conditions.

Learnable moves and strategic use

Yamask primarily learns Ghost-type moves such as Hex, Shadow Ball, and Disable depending on its level. These moves allow it to deal consistent damage while disrupting the opponent. It can also learn moves via TMs, slightly broadening its movesets depending on the chosen strategy.

In battle, Yamask is often used to stall, inflict status conditions, or absorb hits before making way for a more offensive Pokémon. It is rarely chosen to deal massive damage, but it remains useful in certain balanced teams.

Evolution and specific conditions

Yamask evolves into Cofagrigus, a landmark evolution requiring it to reach a certain level. This evolution significantly improves its stats and reinforces its defensive role. In the Galar region, Yamask has an alternate form with a completely different evolution method, which is of particular interest to collectors.

For players aiming to complete the Pokédex, it is important to note that each form of Yamask and each evolution are counted separately depending on the game.

Catch rate and availability

Yamask's catch rate depends heavily on the version of the game. It generally appears in areas linked to ruins, fog, or history-laden locations. Its catch rate is moderate, making it accessible without being too easy to obtain.

In Pokémon GO, Yamask is sometimes available during specific events or raids, which means it can be temporarily unavailable outside of those periods. Its limited availability increases its appeal for players focused on collection and Pokémon cards.
